1. What would you do with a "stavrolexo"?

Answer: Solve it

"Stavrolexo" is the Greek word for "crossword". It is derived from "stavros", meaning "cross", and "lexis", meaning "word".
2. In the famous Norse myth, which kind of plant was used for the murder of Baldr?

Answer: Mistletoe

Baldr, one of Odin's sons, was a god in Norse mythology. The god Loki was envious of Baldr's boldness and valor, and wanted him dead. He persuaded a blind god, Hondur, to throw an arrow with the fatal mistletoe, causing Baldr's death.
3. What animal has the scientific name "Elaphodus cephalophus"?

Answer: Tufted deer

The scientific name for Pere David's deer is "Elaphurus davidianus". The scientific name for fallow deer is "Dama dama". The scientific name for Bawean deer is "Hyelaphus kuhlii".
4. Which of the following Confederate generals of the American Civil War wrote an algebra textbook?

Answer: Daniel Harvey Hill

General Hill's textbook was entitled "Elements of Algebra". It was only one of the works he published. Among them, he wrote a book about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. He was also a very accomplished Confederate general who contributed amazingly to the CSA victory at Chickamauga.
5. Who said, "Atheism shows strength of mind, but only to a certain degree"?

Answer: Blaise Pascal

Pascal's most famous contribution to the growth and expansion of mathematical thought was the Pascal triangle, which demonstrated how binomial coefficients are formed. He also contributed to the development of calculus.
6. In which of the following chemical compounds is it difficult to isolate its ions?

Answer: Ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH)

Ammonium hydroxide ions cannot be isolated because they do not contain significant amounts of ammonia. In chemical equations, we write NH3 + H2O (ammonia and water), instead of NH4OH (ammonium hydroxide).
7. The Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 ended the War of Spanish Succession, but in what modern-day country is the city located?

Answer: The Netherlands

Utrecht is the capital of the Dutch province with the same name. It is the fourth biggest city in the Netherlands. It is also home to the Utrecht University.
8. What is the name of the paleontologist who coined the term "dinosaur"?

Answer: Sir Richard Owen

The term was derived by two Greek words: "deinos" (meaning "terrible") and "sauros" (meaning "lizard"). It's not the most appropriate name, however, since dinosaurs were not lizards.
9. Which athlete won the men's marathon in the 1896 Olympics in Athens, the first modern Olympics?

Answer: Spyros Louis, Greece

Louis was a humble water-carrier, who gained national and worldwide fame as a result of his victory. He became a national hero in Greece, and lifted the morale of his nation.
10. According to the Bible, which prophet did Elijah choose as his successor?

Answer: Elisha

Elisha was a disciple of Elijah, and one of the most important prophets of the time. He was perhaps the greatest wonder-worker in the Old Testament, since he performed more than twice as many wonders as Elijah. He was also known as a patriot, helping the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
