Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If this was the time on the clock on January 1, 2000, where would you likely expect to have seen Dick Clark?

Answer: New York City

Midnight on January 1st would likely indicate New Year's Day and the celebration it ushers in all around the world, and if the clock hits this time, the ball has dropped in Times Square, New York City. What does this have to do with performer Dick Clark? For forty years, Clark hosted the 'New Years Rockin' Eve' celebrations in Times Square in one of the largest annually-televised parties in North America. Following Clark's death in 2012, the show was hosted by Ryan Seacrest.
2. Where would a man see his 'shadow' at this time?

Answer: On his face

A five o'clock shadow refers to a fine layer of beard stubble found on a recently-shaved man's face. If someone shaves in the morning, it's not uncommon to see a light layer of fuzz by (you guessed it) five o'clock. While not all men have such fast-growing facial hair, the term has been around since the 1980s when actors and musicians started popularizing the look. Nowadays, it's a typical style to have stubble; electric razors have settings designed to create it.
3. What day of the week is it at this time in Billy Joel's "Piano Man"?

Answer: Saturday

"It's nine o'clock on a Saturday,
Regular crowd shuffles in."

Billy Joel's piano hit, "Piano Man", was released in 1973 on his second album of the same name. His first major single, the song never hit number one on the Billboard Charts (it peaked at number twenty-five on the Hot 100) but it became a lasting, memorable tune by the artist who would go on to become a major international star. Joel also wrote and sang "The Entertainer", "Only the Good Die Young", and "Uptown Girl" amongst many others.
4. According to a Miss Marple title by Agatha Christie, the train at this time is coming from what station?

Answer: Paddington

"4:50 from Paddington" was the seventh book in Christie's popular Miss Marple series starring elderly, but clever mystery-solver, Jane Marple. In this story, Marple's companion, traveling to her house for a visit, witnesses a murder on another train and Marple is asked to solve the mystery behind it.

The book was released in 1957, seventeen years after her debut in "The Murder at the Vicarage" and almost twenty years before Marple's final novel, "Sleeping Murder". The story has been adapted several times for film and TV.
5. On which day, at this time, would you likely be asked to take a moment of silence, perhaps following "The Last Post"?

Answer: All of these are correct; they are all the same day

Meant to commemorate the end of World War I in 1918 which ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month (November 11th), Remembrance Day is celebrated in many countries around the world though primarily those associated with Great Britain during this great war. At 11:11, a moment of silence may be held during ceremonies dedicated to remembrance; many people also wear red poppies to indicate their solidarity and support of their country's troops.

Remembrance Day is observed in the countries of the British Commonwealth, Veteran's Day is observed in the United States, and Armistice Day is observed in New Zealand and France.
6. If this is the time in Jakarta, what time is it in New York City? (Note: Daylight Savings Time is not being observed.)

Answer: 8:30

If Daylight Savings Time is not observed, New York City is located in the Eastern Standard Time Zone, also known as GMT-5:00. Whatever time it is in the standard location, Greenwich, England, it is five hours before that in New York.

Jakarta, Indonesia is in the Western Indonesian Time Zone which shares the same time as Surabaya and Yogyakarta. It also shares the time with Vietnam and Thailand. This is located at GMT+7:00, so the time in Greenwich is seven hours earlier.

Since Indonesia does not employ Daylight Savings Time at all, you only need to ignore it for New York; this leaves a twelve hour difference, so a New Yorker would be looking at the same time on the clock as an Indonesian-- 8:30-- though at a different time of day.
7. "[Depicted time] and I'm still awake writing a song..." In 2004, "Breathe" was released as a single by what contemporary artist?

Answer: Anna Nalick

Appearing on her debut album, "Wreck of the Day", Anna Nalick's "Breathe (2am)" was quite popular reaching as high as number forty-five on the Billboard Hot 100 (and higher on other charts). Its fame is perhaps more widespread due to its appearance in several TV shows around the same time. Additionally, the soothing lyrics and melody make it quite relaxing and radio-friendly. Nalick has since released another album but it far-from-reached the acclaim and sales totals of her debut.
8. For many years, drivers were advised to hold two 'times' on a steering wheel when driving-- the one depicted and which other time?

Answer: 2:00

The 'ten and two position' has been heard in drivers education courses for a number of years but studies have shown that it increases to risk of damage to the upper extremities in case of a dangerous crash, particularly because of windshield damages and airbag inflation, the latter of which could result in severe fractures. What's 'ten and two'? Well if your steering wheel were a clock, your hands would be held at ten and two (or 2:50...or 10:10). Professionals suggest holding the wheel at 'nine and three' instead; no matter what, both hands should be on the wheel in case of emergency.
9. The clock here depicts the title of a collection of novellas by which author?

Answer: Stephen King

Published in 1990, "Four Past Midnight" included four novellas: "The Langoliers", "Secret Window, Secret Garden", "The Library Policeman", and "The Sun Dog". The "Langoliers" involved a group of peoples' passing into another dimension after falling asleep on a flight to Boston while "Secret Window, Secret Garden" involves a writer's worry that he may have plagiarized another's work (though this obviously has its own horrific bent to it). Both were adapted for film and screen-- the latter became a Johnny Depp film. Stephen King wouldn't publish another full novella collection until "Full Dark, No Stars" in 2010.
10. This is the time required to catch a train to what prison depicted in a movie originally filmed in 1957, but remade fifty years later?

Answer: Yuma

"3:10 to Yuma" (1957), based on a short story by "Get Shorty" author Elmore Leonard, involved a sheriff's struggle to get his western convict on a train to Yuma Penitentiary. Starring Glenn Ford as the villain, the movie was popular and has since been added to the U.S. National Film Registry.

The movie was remade in 2007 starring Russell Crowe in Ford's role and Christian Bale as the sheriff; it made over $70,000,000 in the box office and two Oscar nominations (amidst surprising critical enjoyment). Director James Mangold was also known for "Walk the Line".
