There is only one state in the U.S. with multiple peninsulas. The U.P., as it is known, was given to the state by the federal government in exchange for ceding a small area of land at the southern end of the state to Ohio.

Gerald Ford was the first president to come from Michigan. Ford was also the only president to never be elected to either the presidency or the vice presidency through the same time frame.
