Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This character, created by George Lucas, was played several times by Harrison Ford and is known for his wearing of a hat. Who was this archaeologist?

Answer: Indiana Jones

Indiana Jones always wore a hat. It seems that in order to be a hero (but not a superhero) you need to be wearing a hat. You'll also have more luck with the ladies, apparently, if you're wearing a hat.

Harrison Ford played Han Solo in the 'Star Wars' movies, Dr. Richard Kimble was in 'The Fugitive', and Jack Ryan was in 'Patriot Games'.
2. In the days of silent film comedies, the bowler hat was quite common. But which silent film actor, born Mario Bianchi, was known more for his wearing of a pork pie hat than a bowler hat?

Answer: Monty Banks

Monty Banks was a comedian and film director. His very strong European accent made him not suitable for acting in films with sound so he switched to directing films instead. He directed Laurel and Hardy in their film 'Great Guns'.
Charlie Chaplin, Oliver Hardy and Stan Laurel all wore bowler hats.
3. Some US presidents wore hats. But which US president is famous for wearing a top hat?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln at 192cm (nearly 6'4") obviously wasn't wearing a hat to make himself look taller. Maybe he was just having 'bad hair days'? John Kennedy, James Madison, Martin Van Buren were all short Presidents so they probably could have worn hats to make them seem taller.
Did you know that 80% of US presidents have been the taller of the two candidates? No hats required here!
4. The hat Marlon Brando wore in "The Godfather" was a fedora-style and made by which company?

Answer: Stetson

Stetson make many styles of brimmed hat but are most famously known for their 'cowboy' hats. They made the hat worn by Marlon Brando in 'The Godfather'.
The first Stetson hats were quite expensive and served as a status symbol to people in the late 1800s. Because the hats were made of felt, they could be softened by steam, shaped to fit the head, then left to cool thereby holding the shape of the wearer.
5. Sherlock Holmes' belongings are at the Sherlock Holmes Museum in London. These include a calabash pipe, magnifying glass and what type of hat?

Answer: Deerstalker

Sherlock Holmes was created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He was a character in four novels and 56 short stories - a very busy detective. The deerstalker hat has a brim at the back and front with two flaps on either side which are able to be tied under the chin to protect the ears.
6. One denomination of the Christian religion is well-known for wearing beards, black clothing and hats. Which denomination is this?

Answer: Amish

The width of the brim and shape of the dome on an Amish hat varies between groups, ages and status within a group. The hat is made of felt and is typical dress in winter months and for year-round dress. Men are sometimes able to wear straw hats in summer and some northern climates allow men to wear knit caps.
7. Which disco group, formed in the 1970s, consisted of six members, all wearing hats?

Answer: Village People

The Village People consisted of a police officer, construction worker, biker, cowboy, American Indian, and a military man. They have sold 85 million singles and albums and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2008.
8. Which type of public officer, also popular as entertainment at bachelorette parties, wears a hat and drives a big red truck?

Answer: Fireman

Plenty of young boys want to grow up to be a fireman but it is one of the hardest professions to get into. Firemen need to be physically fit and willing to risk their life to help other people. Long working hours, and plenty of studying and training are part of being a fireman but it is also one of the most rewarding careers around.
9. Which of these cartoon characters, all nemeses of Bugs Bunny, doesn't (generally) wear some kind of headwear?

Answer: Taz

Taz is based on the Australian animal the Tasmanian Devil and is one of Bugs Bunny's many nemeses. His first appearance was in 1954 in 'Devil May Hare' and, after five animated appearances, was dropped until the 1990s. Taz was voiced by Mel Blanc from 1954 until 1989 and has been voiced by several people since.
10. We'll end with my inspiration for this quiz. The Canadian band, 'Men Without Hats' were famous in the 1980s for which song (in which they probably should have at least been wearing hard hats)?

Answer: The Safety Dance

A strange inspiration for this quiz, I know. But hearing the lyrics to the song and never having seen the video clip before, I thought 'this should be an interesting clip'. It was, but not in the way I was expecting. A safety dance would surely involve some hard hats and work boots, wouldn't it?

"The Safety Dance" was a Top 10 hit in both the US and UK. The video clip for the song was filmed near Bath, England and is noted for its medieval look which seemingly has absolutely nothing to do with the song lyrics.
