quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First seen in 1973 what is arguably the most popular early historic couple in the comic strips?

Answer: Hagar and Helga

They're just your typical, everyday Viking types of centuries ago. Hagar's job is looting and pillaging. Helga's job is walloping pots, and Hagar when he comes home drunk. The comic was created by Dik Browne.
(Dik Browne, coincidentally, did the drawings for Hi and Lois when it debuted in 1954)
2. What university is located in Austin, Texas?

Answer: University of Texas

The University of Texas was founded in 1883 by action of the State Legislature. It has about 50,000 students and 2,400 faculty. That's Texas size! TCU is in Fort Worth, Rice in Houston, A. & M. in College Station.
3. Which of these characters was played by Jon Lovitz on "Saturday Night Live"?

Answer: The Devil

Dana Carvey was the Church Lady ("Well, isn't that special!"), Adam Sandler was Opera Man, and Mike Myers was Simon, the little boy who loved to sit in his bathtub and do "drawrings". Lovitz's Devil seemed more like a guy who was trying to be the Devil.
4. What song by James Taylor includes the lyrics "It hurts my motor to go so slow"?

Answer: Traffic Jam

"It hurts my motor to go so slow/Damn this traffic jam". "Traffic Jam" was on "J.T." in 1977. James had hair then!
5. What musical group was led by John Philip Sousa in the 1880's?

Answer: The Marine Band

Sousa was the composer of many famous marches, including "The Stars and Stripes Forever" and "The Liberty Bell", theme of "Monty Python's Flying Circus".
6. What continent are you on if you're trekking across the Kalahari?

Answer: Africa

You might be in Namibia, Botswana, or South Africa, because this is one b-i-g desert.
7. On the TV show "B.J. and the Bear", what was B.J.'s occupation?

Answer: truck driver

The series debuted in 1978 and was about a trucker named Billy Joe McKay (Greg Evigan) and his pet, The Bear, who, oddly enough, was a chimp.
8. In the 1950's, one of the most famous trains in the U.S. was called the Super Chief. What type of locomotive pulled it?

Answer: diesel locomotive

The Super Chief was the top train of the Santa Fe Railroad. Starting in 1936, it ran from Chicago to Los Angeles. Today, miniature replicas of the Super Chief are still a favorite of model railroaders.
9. What was the name of the Egyptian goddess of women, sky, love, mirth, beauty, and fertility? She was also the daughter of the sun god Re.

Answer: Hathor

Hathor is usually portrayed with a sun disk and cow horns.
10. According to dictionary.com, one definition for this word is "A situation that requires a choice between options that are or seem equally unfavorable or mutually exclusive." What is the word?

Answer: dilemma

We all experience them now and then. Two synonyms are "predicament" and "quandary".
11. What character on a classic children's TV show was mute until he spoke during the final episode?

Answer: Clarabelle

Clarabelle had a woman's name but was played by a man, first by Bob Keeshan (later known as Captain Kangaroo), then later by Nick Nicholson and Lou Anderson. Clarabelle's specialty was squirting people with seltzer bottles.
12. What David Mamet play and movie is about three men planning a robbery?

Answer: American Buffalo

The 1996 movie starred Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Franz, and Sean Nelson.
13. Of all four Marx brothers who starred in the movies, which one had the least dialog?

Answer: Harpo

Harpo, in fact, had no dialog at all. He was able to speak but was shy about doing so when he debuted on stage, and he carried that through his entire career. He wore a red wig which looked blonde in black and white. Unlike Groucho and Chico, he was able to go about town without being recognized.
14. Which of these had its origin in Greek mythology?

Answer: the cornucopia

The story goes that Zeus was playing with the goat Amalthea and accidentally broke off one of her horns. To make up for this, Zeus promised that the horn would always be filled with whatever fruits Amalthea wanted. And so we still have the depiction of the great horn filled with fruit. "Cornucopia" actually means "horn of plenty".
15. Ahhhh! Again we have come to the defining moment. What is the common bond among all those answers? Of course, it seems easy enough to me because I know them, but I'll bet you can do it, too! Not to put too fine a >point< on it, but you'll have to be >sharp< to get this one. It's people, places or things that are, have, or have something to do with _____.

Answer: horns

Yes, all horns of one kind or another. There are the kind vehicles have, as in questions 4 (cars, etc.), 7 (trucks) and 8 (diesel locomotives). Then horns on animals, q. 2 (steer horns, the Longhorns being the sports teams of U. of Texas) and 12, the American buffalo or bison. Next: musical horns, like trumpets and trombones (5).

Then we have two people who communicated with horns (11 and 13). After that, it's a mish mosh: Viking-style helmets like those worn by Hagar and Helga (1); the Devil's horns (3); The Horn of Africa (6), around the center of that continent's east coast; an Egyptian god with horns (9); the horns of a dilemma (10); and the famous horn of plenty (14). Well, there you have it, another excursion into the weird, wacky universe of the Common Bond, and you'd better be good or I'll throw another one at you when you least expect it. Love, Mickey.
