Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the square root of 3849444?

Answer: 1962

Square root? That is, what number multiplied by itself would yield this number? Or just use your calculator.
2. What African-American actor appeared in "Lifeboat" (1944), "Body and Soul" (1947), and "Cry the Beloved Country" (1951)?

Answer: Canada Lee

Lee was one of the few prominent actors of color of his time. In "Lifeboat," he was a ship's crewman stuck on the title object with the rest of the cast. In "Body and Soul," he played one of boxer John Garfield's handlers. In "Cry the Beloved Country," he was a South African minister living under apartheid.
3. In the 1950s and 60s, NBC was the first TV network to make frequent use of a new technological advance. How did they advertise this advance?

Answer: "Brought to you in living color"

This was how NBC first used the peacock logo. The first primitive color broadcasts were in non-compatible color. On a B/W set, you'd get several little B/W pictures jumping around on the screen. Compatible color, the one NBC pioneered, meant you'd get a good B/W picture on the B/W sets most people had, and those who bought color sets would get very nice color for that time. You just had to keep adjusting it by hand, especially since there wasn't cable yet. And no remotes either! Gosh, how did we live?
4. What 1973 movie starred Joe Don Baker as Sheriff Buford Pusser?

Answer: Walking Tall

Any time you're not happy with your name, just remember Buford Pusser.
5. What song was a big hit for Buddy Holly in 1957?

Answer: Peggy Sue

Most of the world first got to hear Buddy's high-pitched voice on this mega-hit. Later came "That'll Be the Day" and "Oh, Boy."
6. Who has played third base for the White Sox, the Mets, and the Yankees?

Answer: Robin Ventura

Robin has more than 250 lifetime homers.
7. What absurdist play by Harold Pinter is about a pair of English crooks stuck in what appears to be a former restaurant kitchen with no windows?

Answer: The Dumb Waiter

A dumb waiter or dumbwaiter is one of those tiny elevators on which food, dirty dishes, and garbage can be sent from the restaurant's kitchen to other floors. This play is something like Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot." That is, it also doesn't make much sense.
8. Who was the most recent US President who was born in Missouri (as of 2002)?

Answer: Truman

Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri May 8, 1884. He was President from April 12, 1945, when he succeeded President Frankiln D. Roosevelt when Roosevelt died, to January 20, 1953, when President Dwight Eisenhower was inaugurated. He died December 26, 1972.
9. What song from REM's "Automatic for the People" includes these lyrics: "Hey, Andy, are ya goofin' on Elvis? Hey baby, are ya havin' fun?"

Answer: Man on the Moon

The song makes several references to Andy Kaufman: his wrestling, his film "My Breakfast with Blassie," and his brilliant impression of Elvis.
10. Yep, I'll bet it's become abundantly clear what the common bond is here. It's the full name of a famous person. The first name has 3 letters, last name has 6. Fill in the blank and win a kewpie doll!

Answer: Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey has become a huge star, a long way from his days as a struggling impressionist/comedian. Jim was born on January 17, 1962 (question 1) in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada (ques.2). He was part of the cast of "In Living Color" (3). He's also tall (4). How tall is he? (Boy, it's getting late!) In "Liar, Liar," he describes himself as 6', 2". One of his first movie roles, a small one, was in "Peggy Sue Got Married" (1986)(5).

He plays one of the high school guys. Don't blink! He played the title role in "Ace Ventura, Pet Detective" (1994)and later in "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls." (1995) (6) Then came his funniest movie, in my opinion, "Dumb and Dumber" (1994)(7) with Jeff Daniels.

He showed his acting chops in "The Truman Show" (1998)(8) and "Man on the Moon" (1999)(9), in which he played Andy Kaufman and came so close to becoming Andy that people started to worry about him!
