Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Literature: What is the name of The New Yorker magazine's 'man in the monocle'?

Answer: Eustace Tilley

If you've ever seen a copy of The New Yorker magazine, you've probably seen their "dandy", all dressed up in a top hat with a monocle (no, it's NOT Mr. Peanut!). His image was created by art director Rea Irvin for the cover of the magazine's first issue in 1925.

In the era of 'the flapper', I suppose this signature image may have been meant to conjure up concepts of affluence and superiority. In an early comedy article, one of the magazine's writers, Corey Ford, gave the character a name, i.e., Eustace Tilley, a 'dandy' indeed!
2. History: Which famous person was born on the same date as Abraham Lincoln?

Answer: Charles Darwin

Did you know that two of the most famous men in history were both born on the same day, i.e., February 12, 1809? Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), the 16th President of the United States, and British naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882) were both born on that mid-February day, in the early nineteenth century. The writer of "The Gettysburg Address", and the author of "On the Origin of the Species" have done more to change the world than anyone could have expected.
All of the incorrect choices were also born in 1809.
3. World: Who was the third co-founder of Apple Computer?

Answer: Ron Wayne

For every George Michael there is an Andrew Ridgeley, i.e., the "Wham" factor. Well, Ronald Wayne is the technocrat's Ridgeley. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1934. In February 1976, Ron Wayne co-founded Apple Computer (before it became Apple, Inc.), with Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak (both of whom you may have heard of!). Wayne was the administrative overseer of the trio.

However, after just twelve days, Ron sold out his 10% share for $800. Had he held on to those shares, as of March of 2017, their value would have amounted to $75.5 billion. Regrets?
4. Television: Who played both "The Famous Jet Jackson" and Barry Frost on "Rizzoli and Isles"?

Answer: Lee Thompson Young

If you are a late 'Gen Xer' or an early 'Millennial', you may be familiar with Lee Thompson Young, who was an up-and-coming young actor (1984-2013). From 1998 to 2001, he was the protagonist of the Disney show "The Famous Jett Jackson", a teenage secret agent. Making the transition into adulthood, in 2010, Young played Detective Barry Frost on the cable crime show "Rizzoli and Isles". He had also appeared in films such as "Friday Night Lights" (2004).
Sadly, on August 19, 2013, the 29-year-old took his own life.
5. Sports: Which NFL teams traditionally host games on Thanksgiving Day?

Answer: Detroit and Dallas

The National Football League Detroit Lions began their franchise as the Spartans in Portsmouth, Ohio in 1929, and moved to Detroit in 1934. At the time, the Lions were in competition with an MLB team, (Hank Greenburg's) Detroit Tigers, for fans. The owner believed that the marketing trick of playing on Thanksgiving would provide a larger audience. It worked and the rest, as they say, is history.

As for the Dallas Cowboys: it was 1966 and Tex Schramm was the General Manager of the team. Schramm was the marketing genius who created the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders so, when he suggested playing on Thanksgiving to boost the team's popularity, the tradition began.
6. Movies: What is the name of the corporation in "Blade Runner"?

Answer: Tyrell Corporation

The 1982 film "Blade Runner" about replicants was based on Philip K. Dick's science fiction story "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", originally published in 1968. Rick Deckard is a Replicant Hunter who is assigned to eliminate four runaway robots. When he goes to the company which developed the cyborgs, i.e., the Tyrell Corporation, he meets and falls in love with one of the replicants.
The other fictional corporations were also in films: OmniCorp was in "Robocop"; Cyberdine was in "Terminator"; LexCorp, owned by Lex Luthor, was featured in "Superman".
7. Brain Teasers: What is the name in common for Lee ____ Show?

Answer: Grant

Lee Grant is an actress who was born in New York City in 1937. Her debut film was "Detective Story" in 1951, with Kirk Douglas. Among her awards was an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the film "Shampoo" (1975), with Warren Beatty.

Grant Show is an actor who was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1962. He is, perhaps, best known for his role as Jake Hanson on "Melrose Place", from 1992 to 1997.
8. Hobbies: Which of the following foods is mismatched with its name?

Answer: Missouri mud pie

Although Missouri, especially St. Louis, is the home of many goodies, e.g., cotton candy, slingers, concretes and pork steak, mud pies are not among their specialties. Mississippi mud pie is a dessert pie which is thought to have originated in the state of Mississippi. It is made with chocolate sauce on chocolate cake and, as if that weren't enough, it is often topped with ice cream. Jerusalem artichokes are nutty-flavored tubers from a species of sunflower.
Yorkshire pudding is a food made with eggs, flour and milk (and beef and gravy).
Welsh rarebit is made with melted cheese over slices of toasted bread. MMMMM!
9. Music: We lost Maurice White in 2016; of which band was he a member?

Answer: Earth, Wind & Fire

Jazz drummer Maurice White (1941-2016) was the founder of the band Earth, Wind & Fire, which originated in Chicago, Illinois in 1970. The original members were Maurice, his younger brother Verdine on bass, Philip Bailey ("Easy Lover") as co-lead singer, and Ralph Johnson on drums. Known by his nickname "Reese", White won seven Grammy Awards, and was nominated for a total of twenty Grammys.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame individually, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame as a member of EWF, and the Songwriters' Hall of Fame.
10. Science: Alektorophobia is the fear of what?

Answer: chickens

Alektorophobia is the irrational, persistent and excessive fear of chickens. This fear usually stems from some earlier, traumatic event relating to chickens - possibly getting scratched or clawed as a child? In fact, German film director Werner Herzog and American actress Shannon Elizabeth are sufferers.

As for the other choices: fear of light is photophobia, fear of cats is called ailurophobia, fear of gum is chiclephobia; Oprah Winfrey is chiclephobic.
One of the oddest phobias might be furniturephobia/antiques; Billy Bob Thornton supposedly can't be in a room with furniture older than the 1950s.
