Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1970s/1980s British band consisted of Andy Summers, Stewart Copeland and Gordon Sumner?

Answer: The Police

The Buggles were the first band to be shown on MTV with 'Video Killed the Radio Star'. Yes and Cream were British rock bands formed in the 1960s. The Police were the world's highest earning musicians in 2008, and 'Rolling Stone' magazine ranked them at number 70 on their list of the '100 Greatest Artists of All Time'.

They are remembered for songs such as 'Message in a Bottle', 'Roxanne', 'Every Breath You Take' and, my own personal favourite, 'Walking on the Moon'. With 13 singles in the US Hot 100 and 20 in the UK Top 50 charts, they were a very successful group recording from the 1970s until 1984 when they split up.

They did reunite in 2007 for a 30th anniversary tour.
2. H.G. Wells wrote a story featuring Morlocks and Eloi. What was the name of this book?

Answer: The Time Machine

Spot the 'red herrings'? Of course, it was Jules Verne who wrote 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' and '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea'. The other two books were written by H.G. Wells and are well worth taking the time to read (if you haven't already).
3. In 1989, James Belushi starred in a film about a detective who had fallen foul of a group of drug smugglers. For his protection, he was given a police 'sniffer' dog. What was this film called?

Answer: K-9

James Belushi also starred in 'Real Men' and 'Only the Lonely'. His older brother John Belushi died in 1982.
4. Which scientific term describes 'the boundless three dimensional extent in which objects and events occur and have relative position and direction'?

Answer: Space

There are spectacular images from space that can be seen through the Hubble space telescope. This telescope got its name from Edwin Hubble.

(Definition taken from Wikipedia).
5. In which year did all of the following occur: Coca-Cola launched Tab cola; the 'Great Train Robbery' occurred; the Dartford Tunnel opened in England; and President Kennedy was assassinated?

Answer: 1963

The year 1963 had other firsts. 'Dr No', the first Bond film, opened in US cinemas in 1963. That same year, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space aboard Vostok 6. Lastly, the opening of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio took place in 1963.
6. A person who is connected to you by blood or marriage is called what?

Answer: Relative

Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, or anybody else who is related to you is called your relative. Kinship can be from blood or marriage.
7. All of the following are definitions for what word? An owner of a slave, animal, etc. An employer of workers or servants. The male head of a household.

Answer: Master

The word 'master' has many uses. It is also commonly thought to have been said by Igor in the 'Frankenstein' films as 'Yeth, Marthter'.
8. Barbara Euphan Todd wrote a series of children's books about a scarecrow that lived on Scatterbrook Farm; what was his name?

Answer: Worzel Gummidge

Worzel lived in the ten-acre field near the village of Scatterbrook in the series 'Worzel Gummidge: The scarecrow of Scatterbrook Farm'. He had a number of interchangeable heads which he used dependent on how clever he wanted to be. In the books by Barbara Euphan Todd, Aunt Sally was Worzel's aunt, but in the TV series she became his friend who he tried to take him out for tea and cakes.
9. What word means 'a single item or person; the lowest positive integer; one; or a body of soldiers'?

Answer: Unit

'One is one and all alone and ever more shall be so'. This line is from a popular folk song 'Green Grow the Rushes Oh!', the origins of which seem to be lost in the mists of time. The song is a type of counting song, starting with one and, in some versions, ending at twelve with the line 'Twelve for the twelve Apostles' etc.
10. By now you shouldn't need a medic to work out the common bond. Who is it?

Answer: doctor who

So, the answer is the time traveling Time Lord 'Dr Who', but how did we reach that conclusion?

'Dr Who' travels in 'The Tardis' which is a TIME MACHINE disguised as a POLICE box. Tardis is an acronym for 'time and RELATIVE dimensions in SPACE'. The programme first aired in *1963*. One of the Dr's enemies was The MASTER - played originally by Roger Delgado. The Dr's main ally on Earth was Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart, the commander of U.N.I.T. The Dr's robotic dog was called K9. That only leaves me with WORZEL GUMMIDGE, who was played by Jon Pertwee, the third doctor after William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton.
