Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Category: Video Games Which of the following video games was NOT released in the 1970s?

Answer: Donkey Kong

"Donkey Kong", which was manufactured by Nintendo, was released in 1981. The game originally featured Jump Man, now known as Mario, who had to try to rescue his girlfriend Pauline by successfully climbing different levels to reach her. "Odyssey" was released in 1972, "Pong" also in 1972, and "Space Invaders" in 1978.

This author has played none of these games and has a bar level of 0% in the graph provided for members to see their strong to weaker subjects. This is my weakest link!
2. Category: Animals What are three ways that animals try to survive winter?

Answer: Migration, hibernation, and adaptation

Migration, hibernation, and adaptation are three activities employed by animals to survive winter. Migration occurs when animals travel in winter to find warmth or food. Caribou, whales, monarch butterflies and some fish are examples of migrating animals that may travel south in winter for warmth or food. Adaptation occurs when animals change their behavior or their bodies to survive winter. The red fox changes its eating habits by eating mice in the winter rather than its usual diet of fruit and insects in the remaining seasons. Hibernation occurs when an animal goes into a deep sleep with a change in its body temperature, heartbeat, and breathing. Hibernating animals include bears, bats and chipmunks.

Animals is a 59% or so category for me. I guess I am not wild about them!
3. Category: Music To which type of 21st century music would you do the dance "The Jerk"?

Answer: Rap

The Jerk is a dance done to rap music which consists of bending and raising your right and left legs while moving them back and forth with a rapid jerk movement. It is sometimes referred to as "the reject". This type of dancing originated from a street dance done in Los Angeles, California.

When dancing to this type of rap music there is a certain popular attire which includes tight pants, colorful tee shirts, and high top sneaker shoes. If the music category included much of the music from 2000 on, I think my approximate 60% would be much lower, like 0. I also did not know that there was a dance called the Jerk in the early 1960s. And I thought I was "hip" to know doing the Bump! Still in low 60%.
4. Category: Sports Some U.S. National Football League teams have scored very few points in their Super Bowl losses. Which team scored fewer than seven points in 1972's Super Bowl game?

Answer: Miami Dolphins

In the 1972 Super Bowl game, the Miami Dolphins lost to the Dallas Cowboys 24-3. In the 1969 Bowl game, the New York Jets, once known as the New York Titans, defeated the Baltimore Colts 16-7. In the 2001 Super Bowl game, the Baltimore Ravens (formerly the Cleveland Browns) defeated the New York Giants 34-7.

The Minnesota Vikings went to the Super Bowl four times in the 20th century and lost by a score of seven twice. In 1974, Minnesota lost to the Miami Dolphins 24-7, and in 1970 the team lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 23-7. An approximate 61% category for me. I do not think it will improve much. I run hot and cold as a sports fan. Perhaps that's because I follow Philadelphia sports teams? (1981 Super Bowl, Oakland Raiders 27 and Philadelphia Eagles 10; 2005, New England Patriots 24-Eagles 21).

Inching up a bit but usually drop the ball in the Sports category.
5. Category: Celebrities Which 1940-50s Hollywood actress and Oscar-winning star of "Casablanca" created a scandal by her affair with a married Italian movie director?

Answer: Ingrid Bergman

Swedish born Hollywood actress Ingrid Bergman had a notorious affair with Italian movie director Roberto Rosselini. Bergman was married and mother of one child, and Rosselini was also married. They not only shocked the 1950s' world with their affair but also that she was pregnant with Rosselini's child. Featured in Hollywood magazines as a wholesome wife and mother, and in her movie roles as a frightened housewife in the film "Gaslight", and portraying Joan of Arc on Broadway, Ingrid Bergman's affair fueled the public outrage which eventually drove her out of the country.

Ingrid Bergman went on to marry Roberto Rosselini. She is the mother of Ingrid Rossellini, Renato Roberto Giusto Giuseppe Rossellini, Pia Lindström, Isabella Rossellini. Celebrities is a weak category for this author. Hmm perhaps there is more to it that I should know! "Up Up and Away" to the '70s I shall try to come. I guess I have to spend more time waiting in a supermarket line to get this score up!
6. Category: Movies At the 2014 Academy Award Oscar ceremony, in which movie did Oscar-nominated Meryl Streep (Best Actress) and Julia Roberts (Best Supporting Actress) star in a tale of a dysfunctional family's weekend gathering in Oklahoma?

Answer: August Osage County

"August Osage County", once a short run Broadway play, was not nominated for the 2014 Best Picture Academy Award despite the strong cast and the nominated performances of Streep and Roberts. Both actresses gave superb performances in their mother-daughter roles. All three wrong answers listed above were nominated films for the 2014 Academy Award for Best Picture of the Year. "American Hustle" was the 2014 winner. My movie going attendance runs in spurts.

It is unusual that I did see all four movies mentioned here. Percentage on the rise, surprise surprise.
7. Category: Literature What James Michener novel features a queen, a minister, a golden man and plantations?

Answer: Hawaii

"Hawaii" is an epic historical novel by author James Michener. The first section of the book traces the geological development of the island. Thereafter, each section of the book tells the stories of the Polynesian, American, Japanese and Chinese immigrants to Hawaii. Each group's migration history is told in individual segments. The story of Queen Malama is in the Polynesian section. And Abner Hale, a New England Calvin Minister's story, is in the second section. The Japanese and Chinese segments tell of their families and their strong participation in the Hawaiian pineapple plantation economy. At the conclusion of the story, Michener introduces us to "The Golden Man" who is a fusion of all the immigrants through a history of intermarriages. The three wrong answers listed here are all products of James Michener's pen, as well as many more historical fiction books.

What a surprise to this author that her literary percent is in the sixties. Either she has not read enough or her memory is slowing down. I will try harder in this category. Aloha to the sixties in this category.
8. Category: People Which English philosopher, mathematician, political activist and educator was imprisoned for his anti-war views on World War I in 1918?

Answer: Bertrand Russell

Bertrand Russell, philosopher and anti-war activist as well as anti-nuclear weapons activist, served six months in a British prison after the end of World War I. The imprisonment was for his alleged denouncement of the war and the government's military conscription position. Because he publicly made known his allegiance to pacifism, Bertrand Russell was dismissed from his faculty post at Trinity College in 1916. An active protester against the Vietnam War and also the United States' stance on nuclear weaponry, Russell held steadfastly to his philosophy about non-violence.

The one exception was his view that the world would be unsafe for democracy if Adolf Hitler was not defeated. Getting one right for a mathematician is a start. I think I will get to add up in this category.
9. Category: Television Which British comedy series, that was also featured on Public Television in the United States, described the antics of the employees of the Grace Department Store?

Answer: Are You Being Served?

At times this British comedy series is a "laugh aloud" series. The antics of the four starring employees of the fictional Grace Department Store are caricatures and generalizations of Britain's "class" system, but the writers are kindly in their humor.

A comedy series that uses gags, slapstick, and some blue situations, it is enjoyable to watch. Also very funny are the three wrong answers. Between 1972 and 1985, "Are You Being Served?" ran on the BBC. It has been shown in Australia, Canada, and the United States. Surely it will serve me better to improve in this category.
10. Category: History What is unique about the small town of Solvang, which is nestled in the Santa Inez Valley of California?

Answer: It is a replica of a Danish town

If you visit Solvang, California, which I have had the privilege of doing so, you have the feeling of having been parachuted into a small village in Denmark. Solvang is Danish for 'Sunny Field'. The architecture pays homage to 19th century Denmark of Hans Christian Andersen.

It was founded by a group of teachers in 1911 and had its centennial in 2011. Tadah! Jeg er ankommet (Danish for "I have arrived") to 70%!
