Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. May, June, March, August, ___. Now what month should come next in the sequence?

Answer: October

January would also work for the sequence, since it is a list of the months in order of the number of letters in their name.

The full list is three - May; four - June/July; five - March/April; six - August; seven - January/October; eight - February/November/December; and nine - September.
2. Montgomery, Juneau, Phoenix, ___. Now what US state capital city comes next in the sequence?

Answer: Little Rock

Montgomery is the capital of Alabama, Juneau is in Alaska, and Phoenix is in Arizona. So the next in the alphabetical sequence is the capital of Arkansas - Little Rock.

Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico, Baton Rouge is in Louisiana and Jefferson City is in Missouri.
3. Scarlet, apricot, lemon, olive, ___. Now what colour should come next in the sequence?

Answer: Azure

Scarlet is a shade of red, apricot a shade of orange, lemon a shade of yellow and olive a shade of green. So the next in the rainbow sequence has to be azure, which is a shade of blue, as we work through the colours of the spectrum in order.

Cerise is a shade of pink, lilac a shade of mauve and ebony is black. None of those colours appear in the rainbow spectrum, which is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
4. 100, 500, 1, 50, 1000, 5, ___. Now what number comes next in the sequence?

Answer: 10

Forget arithmetical calculations, and go back to ancient Rome.

C = 100, D = 500, I = 1, L = 50, M = 1000, and V = 5.

Now you can probably see that it is the Roman numerals in alphabetical order, so the next in the sequence is X, which is 10.
5. Sorrow, joy, girl, boy, ___. Now what metal follows next in the sequence?

Answer: Silver

There is a superstitious rhyme which is supposed to indicate what you might find depending on how many magpies you see. One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy, five for silver, six for gold, seven for a secret never to be told. So silver is the next item in my sequence.

This rhyme was sung as the theme tune to 'Magpie', a children's magazine programme broadcast on ITV in the UK from 1968 to 1980.
6. Maiden, scales, scorpion, archer, ___. Now what the animal should come next in the sequence?

Answer: Goat

The maiden represents Virgo, the scales symbolise Libra, the scorpion is Scorpio and the archer is the symbol for Sagittarius. The next sign of the zodiac is Capricorn, which is represented by a goat.

The full list is: Aries - ram; Taurus - bull; Gemini - twins; Cancer - crab; Leo - lion; Virgo - maiden; Libra - scales; Scorpio - scorpion; Sagittarius - archer; Capricorn - goat; Aquarius - water-carrier; and Pisces - fish.
7. Australia, China, New Zealand, Burundi, ___. Now what country comes next in the sequence?

Answer: St. Kitts and Nevis

National flags need to be considered for this sequence. Australia has six stars on its flag, China has five, New Zealand has four, and Burundi has three. So the next country in the sequence needs to have two stars on its flag. Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and Dominica have no stars on their flags, while St. Kitts and Nevis has the requisite two. We could complete the sequence with Turkey, which has one star on its flag.

Australia's flag is a blue ensign with five white stars of the Southern Cross on the right, and a white star for the Commonwealth below the Union Flag.

The Chinese flag is red with one large star and four smaller stars in the top left corner. The stars are yellow.

New Zealand's flag is also a blue ensign, with four stars of the Southern Cross in red, edged with white on the right.

The flag of Burundi has diagonal white stripes with a white circle in the centre. There are three red stars edged in green on the circle. The rest of the flag has red filling the gaps between the diagonals at the top and bottom, and green filling the gaps on the sides.

The flag of St Kitts and Nevis has a diagonal black stripe from top right to bottom left with two white stars on it. The band is edged in yellow, with green above it and red below it.

The Turkish flag is red with a white crescent and a white star on it.
8. Boron, Carbon, Fluorine, Hydrogen, Iodine, ___. Now what element comes next in the sequence?

Answer: Potassium

The answer doesn't depend on the alphabetical order of their names, but uses the chemical symbol. Boron - B, Carbon - C, Fluorine - F, Hydrogen - H, and Iodine - I. The next single letter, alphabetically, which is used in the periodic table is K for Potassium.

Nitrogen is N, Oxygen is O, and Sulfur is S. Others are Phosphorus - P, Uranium - U, Vanadium - V and Yttrium - Y. The rest of the elements all have more than one letter for their symbols.
9. Minutes in an hour, stars on the US flag, weeks of pregnancy, ___. Now what comes next in the sequence?

Answer: Days in September

There are 60 minutes in an hour. There are 50 stars on the US flag, one for each of the states in the union. Pregnancy is usually reckoned to last for 40 weeks. So the next item in the sequence needs to be something which has a count of 30 - i.e. days in September, or April, June or November.

There are 12 days of Christmas, 24 hours in a day and 60 seconds in a minute.
10. Austria, Belgium, Cuba, Germany, ___. Now what country should come next in this sequence?

Answer: Spain

This is a sequence based on international car registration letters.

A is Austria, B is Belgium, C is Cuba, D is Germany. The next letter is E, which is the registration letter for Spain.

F is France, G is Gabon, H is Hungary, I is Italy, J is Japan, K is Cambodia, L is Luxembourg, M is Malta, N is Norway, P is Portugal, Q is Qatar, S is Sweden, T is Thailand, V is the Vatican City and Z is Zambia. The codes O, R, U, W, X are not used for any country. Y was used for Yugoslavia before the break-up.
