Question 1 of 10
1. "Though it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night
I can see paradise by the dashboard light"

The song involves one car, two people and a lot of "energy", so here's an energy related question on which to muse. Dashboards derive their name from the protective board placed in front of a horse drawn carriage to shield its occupants from objects thrown up by the horses' hooves. As these projectiles are flying through the air, what type of energy do they exhibit?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. "And we were glowing like
The metal on the edge of a knife"

Assuming that the metal of the knife is polished, what sort of reflection is it demonstrating?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. "I remember every little thing
As if it happened only yesterday"

Which of the following disorders, generally characterised by a loss of memory, can lead to a sufferer forgetting recent events but remembering the past "as if it happened only yesterday"?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. "We were doubly blessed
'Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed"

The laws of most countries contain an age of consent intended to reflect the age at which a person is psychologically able to agree to full sexual activity. In which of these countries would Meatloaf and his "friend" be committing an offence?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. "Baby doncha hear my heart
You got it drowning out the radio"

It is probably no surprise that a young man's heart should start pounding but, in 2008, a paper in the "Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine" suggested that which of these ejaculatory activities might also be linked to the thought of sex?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. "Well I wanna make your motor run"

A car's motor or engine is that device that converts an energy source into mechanical action. The energy source can take a number of different forms. Which of the following has NOT been used to "make a motor run"?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. "Ok, here we go, we got a real pressure cooker going here"

Which of the following statements is true about cooking meatloaf in a pressure cooker?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. "Baby, baby let me sleep on it"

It has long been held that a person is more likely to solve a problem if they return to it after having slept. A study, published in 2009, set out to test this hypothesis. What conclusions were drawn?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. "And when the feeling came upon me
Like a tidal wave"

Most tidal waves (or tsunamis) are caused by earthquakes and can be accentuated by landslides. I don't know the size of wave that Meatloaf was envisaging but one of the largest ever recorded occurred in Alaska in 1958. This stripped vegetation from the local coastline, up to what height above sea level?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. "It was long ago and it was far away
and it was so much better than it is today"

I have to agree. For me, today's music rarely seems to compare with the "Bat Out of Hell" era of the late 1970s. My tastes confirm the findings of research conducted by Morris Holbrook and Robert Schindler. Which period of life did they find most influences a person's musical preferences?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Though it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night I can see paradise by the dashboard light" The song involves one car, two people and a lot of "energy", so here's an energy related question on which to muse. Dashboards derive their name from the protective board placed in front of a horse drawn carriage to shield its occupants from objects thrown up by the horses' hooves. As these projectiles are flying through the air, what type of energy do they exhibit?

Answer: Both kinetic energy and potential energy

Each clod of earth possesses kinetic energy by virtue of its movement and potential energy (relative to the ground) by virtue of its height.

I do like the acronym offered by Wikipedia - "dial and switch housing" - but, sadly, this is not the word's primary derivation.
2. "And we were glowing like The metal on the edge of a knife" Assuming that the metal of the knife is polished, what sort of reflection is it demonstrating?

Answer: Specular reflection

Specular reflection is best illustrated by the example of a mirror where a single beam of light will be reflected as a single beam of light. The intensity of the "glow" for the viewer is, therefore, totally dependent upon their viewing point. In contrast, a surface exhibiting diffuse reflection will reflect the beam in a number of different directions.
3. "I remember every little thing As if it happened only yesterday" Which of the following disorders, generally characterised by a loss of memory, can lead to a sufferer forgetting recent events but remembering the past "as if it happened only yesterday"?

Answer: Dementia

Gerontophobia is the fear of old people or growing old. Hansen's disease is another name for leprosy. Progeria is a genetic condition that manifests itself in premature aging.
4. "We were doubly blessed 'Cause we were barely seventeen And we were barely dressed" The laws of most countries contain an age of consent intended to reflect the age at which a person is psychologically able to agree to full sexual activity. In which of these countries would Meatloaf and his "friend" be committing an offence?

Answer: Turkey

In each of these countries the age of consent is sixteen except for Turkey where it is eighteen. Although the age of consent is defended on the grounds of psychological capacity, one might question whether the chosen age has more to do with cultural perceptions given its marked fluctuations - upwards and downwards - through history.
5. "Baby doncha hear my heart You got it drowning out the radio" It is probably no surprise that a young man's heart should start pounding but, in 2008, a paper in the "Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine" suggested that which of these ejaculatory activities might also be linked to the thought of sex?

Answer: Sneezing

The research was carried out by Mahmood Bhutta and Harold Maxwell. They postulated that the phenomenon, experienced by some men, may be the result of "crossed wires" in the autonomic nervous system. It may also have a genetic element, just as sneezing in response to bright light or a full stomach can run in families.
6. "Well I wanna make your motor run" A car's motor or engine is that device that converts an energy source into mechanical action. The energy source can take a number of different forms. Which of the following has NOT been used to "make a motor run"?

Answer: Brain waves

In 2009, a team from the UK's University of Warwick built a Formula 3 racing car that was powered from chocolate waste. It highlighted the fact that pretty well anything that contains fat can be converted into diesel ("New York Times", April 22nd 2009). This was also illustrated in a 1998 episode of "The Simpsons" - "Lard of the Dance" - where Homer and Bart attempt to make money by stealing grease from the canteen of Bart's school.

Many early cars were powered by steam with an external rather than internal combustion engine. Steam technology has continued through to the present day and, in August 2009, a new record of 139.843 mph was set for the measured mile.

No-one, as yet, has designed a car that can run on brain waves. If they did, I suspect there are some days when my car would fail to get out of second gear!
7. "Ok, here we go, we got a real pressure cooker going here" Which of the following statements is true about cooking meatloaf in a pressure cooker?

Answer: Cooking time will be shorter than in a conventional oven.

As the pressure builds up in the cooker, it raises the boiling point thereby increasing the temperatures at which the contents are cooked and reducing the cooking time. The "Rocky Horror" reference is to the character Eddie, played by Meatloaf in the 1975 movie version, who is eaten in the show.
8. "Baby, baby let me sleep on it" It has long been held that a person is more likely to solve a problem if they return to it after having slept. A study, published in 2009, set out to test this hypothesis. What conclusions were drawn?

Answer: Sleep made a difference particularly if it included REM sleep

The research was conducted by a team from the University of California San Diego and was published in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences". The team studied a sample of 77 individuals. These were given a series of problems to solve and then told to allow several hours to pass before returning to the task.

Some spent the interim awake, some asleep. Those whose sleep included an REM phase, improved their performance by about 40%. The precise reasons for this are unknown but the team hypothesized that, during REM sleep, the brain is integrating new information with existing information. On waking, the brain is then better able to make informed decisions.
9. "And when the feeling came upon me Like a tidal wave" Most tidal waves (or tsunamis) are caused by earthquakes and can be accentuated by landslides. I don't know the size of wave that Meatloaf was envisaging but one of the largest ever recorded occurred in Alaska in 1958. This stripped vegetation from the local coastline, up to what height above sea level?

Answer: 1720 feet

The wave struck Lituya Bay in south-eastern Alaska. It was caused by an earthquake that dislodged approximately 40 million cubic yards of rock causing it to fall up to 3,000 feet into the sea below. Millions of trees were completely removed by the wave.
10. "It was long ago and it was far away and it was so much better than it is today" I have to agree. For me, today's music rarely seems to compare with the "Bat Out of Hell" era of the late 1970s. My tastes confirm the findings of research conducted by Morris Holbrook and Robert Schindler. Which period of life did they find most influences a person's musical preferences?

Answer: Late teens and early adulthood

Holbrook and Schindler's results, published in the "Journal of Consumer Research" in 1989, should make intuitive sense to anyone that has ever contemplated the music that advertisers use in commercials. They found that people's strongest musical preferences are laid down in late adolescence and early adulthood.

When plotted on a graph, their sample results showed an inverted "U" distribution peaking at the age of 24.
