Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The revenge taken on Michael Douglas by Glenn Close in "Fatal Attraction" could be said to sum up a certain saying. Can you complete it? It starts "Hell hath no fury like....

Answer: A woman scorned

In "Fatal Attraction" Michael Douglas has a one night stand with Glenn Close. When he rejects her further advances she starts to stalk him and his family and becomes more and more obsessed with him. Probably the most famous scene from this 1987 film is where she kills the pet rabbit and leave it boiling on the stove. This gave us the phrase "bunny boiler".
2. The revenge taken by a wife against her straying husband can take many forms. Who came to fame when, rather than cover his car in paint or cut up his clothes, she cut off her husband's penis with a kitchen knife?

Answer: Lorena Bobbitt

The Bobbitts had a volatile relationship. He flaunted his affairs, and she also claimed that he had physically abused her and forced her to have an abortion. In June 1993 they returned to their apartment after a night out. Both were drunk. She claimed that he then raped her.

Afterwards she went to the kitchen to get a drink of water, took a sharp kitchen knife, returned to the bedroom and cut off around half of his penis. She then got in the car, and taking the severed member with her, drove for a while before throwing it into a field. Fortunately for John Bobbitt it was found, and re-attached in a lengthy operation.
3. Revenge is a popular literary theme. Which book is this? A young man is wrongly accused of being a Bonapartist traitor. He is jailed for life but escapes, assumes a false identity, and sets about destroying those who conspired against him.

Answer: The Count of Monte Cristo

Completed in 1844, this book is one of the most popular written by Alexander Dumas. It covers the historical period 1815 - 1838, starting just after Napoleon's final exile. At this time people were terrified that he would escape again and start another war, and Napoleonic sympathisers were believed to be everywhere.

Although the book has a theme of revenge it also shows how revenge can impact on the innocent as well as the guilty.
4. Complete the well known saying. "Revenge is a dish best served..."?

Answer: Cold

"Revenge is a dish best served cold". In other words, don't do anything in the heat of the moment. Think about it, plan it, make it fit the crime, do it when your intended victim thinks you have forgotten all about it and least expects it. Then savour it to the full.
5. Many of Shakespeare's plays have revenge as a theme. Which of these is NOT a revenge play written by Shakespeare?

Answer: The Way of the World

The revenge play became popular in Elizabethan and Jacobean times. "The Spanish Tragedy", by Thomas Kyd, is generally accepted to be the first revenge play of the period. It was first performed in 1587 and was the Elizabethan equivalent of a smash hit.

"The Way of the World" was written by William Congreve in 1700.
6. Movies have made great use of the revenge motif over the years. Which film is this? It is adapted from a Stephen King book. A young girl, humiliated at the school prom by a vicious practical joke, unleashes her supernatural powers to take revenge on her tormentors.

Answer: Carrie

Starring Sissie Spacek this 1976 horror film is based on Stephen King's first published novel. Carrie White is a shy and troubled teenager who has supernatural powers that seem to increase when she is upset or annoyed. When she is humiliated by having pig's blood dumped over her during the school prom her powers enable her to exact a bloody and fatal revenge on her classmates.
7. Never upset a singer/songwriter. She might just write a song about you. Who wrote and recorded "You're So Vain"?

Answer: Carly Simon

Released in 1972 "You're So Vain" is a criticism of a self obsessed ex-lover.
Written and performed by Carly Simon, it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the UK singles chart. Carly Simon has always refused to say who the song is about. She has denied that it is about Mick Jagger, but in 1989 did go so far as to say it was about a composite of three men she had known in the past. It has long been believed that Warren Beatty is one of them.
8. Which famous advocate of passive resistance said "An eye for an eye would make the whole world blind"?

Answer: Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi did not believe in violence of any kind. He believed in achieving his ends by non violent civil disobedience and passive resistance. Revenge of any form was anathema to him. After achieving independence for India he was assassinated in 1948.
9. Traveler's diarrhea, especially when suffered whilst visiting Mexico, is popularly known as what?

Answer: Montezuma's Revenge

Montezuma was an Aztec Emperor killed during the Spanish invasion of Mexico. Traveler's diarrhea when visiting that country is believed to be his revenge on all subsequent visitors to that country. It is usually brought on by unfamiliar, often spicy foods, and is accompanied by stomach cramps and nausea. It usually passes without treatment after a few days.
10. Which Fay Weldon book is about the lengths an unattractive wife goes to to take revenge on her husband and his mistress?

Answer: The Life and Loves of a She Devil

When Ruth's husband leaves her for his mistress he calls her a "she devil". She resolves to live up to this description and goes to extraordinary lengths to take revenge on her husband and his mistress. Written by Fay Weldon in 1983 "The Life and Loves of a She Devil" was also made into a very successful BBC television series.
