Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the most characteristic symptom of scarlet fever?

Answer: red rash

The rash is accompanied by fever, sore throat, a "strawberry" appearance of the tongue, paranoia, and hallucinations. Symptoms generally last a week, but it can take longer for swelling in the tonsils and glands to subside.

There is no current vaccine for scarlet fever. A vaccine was created in 1924 by Gladys and George Dick, but the rise of antibiotics in the 1940s made the treatment and prevention of scarlet fever more effective than the vaccine.
2. Which members of the Catholic Church clergy wear scarlet as part of their official vestments?

Answer: cardinals

The scarlet vestments symbolize the cardinal's willingness to die for their faith. Their normal wardrobe has scarlet accents, but their more formal choir dress is predominantly scarlet with white lace.

The birds of North and South America are called cardinals because of their red plumage, after the Catholic cardinals' vestments.

3. The Scarlet Knight is the mascot for what New Jersey university?

Answer: Rutgers

The original team name, the Queensmen, referred to the original name of Rutgers, Queen's College. From 1925-1955 the mascot was a Chanticleer (a medieval fighting rooster), until being changed to the Scarlet Knight.

Although scarlet was not officially adopted as the school color until 1900, the Rutgers players did wear scarlet handkerchiefs as a team "uniform" during the first college football games in 1869. Scarlet had been proposed as the school color by the student newspaper, "The Daily Targum" earlier in 1869.
4. Will Scarlet, Little John, Friar Tuck, and Alan-a-dale were members of the Merry Men, a group of outlaws. Who was their leader?

Answer: Robin Hood

Will Scarlet is mentioned in "A Gest of Robyn Hode", one of the earliest surviving stories of Robin Hood (the oldest book with the story dates to somewhere between 1492 and 1534). In the early stories the character had several different surnames: Scarlet, Scarlett, Scarlock, Scadlock, Scatheloke, Scathelocke or Shacklock. Some writers have taken the different names to be different people.

Will is usually depicted as a young man, who is fond of wearing red, and an accomplished swordsman.

5. Which actress won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone With the Wind" (1939)?

Answer: Vivien Leigh

Vivien Leigh (1913-1967) won two Academy Awards for Best Actress for her work in "Gone With the Wind" (1939) and "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951). She also received a Tony Award for her role in "Tovarich" (1963).

Scarlett O'Hara is the main character of "Gone With the Wind", a Southern lady who doesn't fit in Southern society. But what makes her different is what enables her to survive when her world falls apart after the Civil War.

6. The Scarlet Witch is a comic book superhero who has appeared in the Marvel Universe series of films, starting with a brief cameo during the credits of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (2014). What is her civilian name?

Answer: Wanda Maximoff

Wanda first appeared in X-Men #4 (1964) published by Marvel Comics.

While the character only had a cameo during the credits of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (2014), she played a much larger part in 2015's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and 2016's "Captain America: Civil War". In these movies the character is played by Elizabeth Olsen.

Bonus Scarlet Trivia: Actress Scarlett Johansson was also in those films, as Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow.
7. The main character of "The Scarlet Letter" is Hester Prynne, who accepts her punishment but clams up when asked to name the father of her illegitimate child. But this question isn't about the parents - what is the daughter's name?

Answer: Pearl

"The Scarlet Letter: A Romance" (1850, by Nathaniel Hawthorne) is set in the mid-1600s in Boston. The widowed Hester Prynne has given birth to a daughter, obvious evidence that she has committed adultery. Punished and given a red "A" to mark her as an adulteress, Prynne refuses to name the father of the child.

8. In the 1903 play "The Scarlet Pimpernel", the hero heads off to save people during what dangerous conflict?

Answer: French Revolution

Set in the "Reign of Terror" of the French Revolution, mild-mannered aristocrat Sir Percy Blakeney operates in secret as the Scarlet Pimpernel, rescuing noblemen before they can be beheaded by the revolutionaries. His symbol is a small red flower, the scarlet pimpernel.

Sir Percy is the first "secret identity" hero in literature.

The 1903 play was written by Emma Orczy, who penned a later novel (1905) and a whole series of books.
9. "A Study in Scarlet" was the first published story featuring which famous literary "consulting detective"?

Answer: Sherlock Holmes

In "A Study in Scarlet" (1887) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dr. Watson meets Sherlock Holmes and they go on to solve a mystery of murder and revenge. The second part of the book is mostly an unflattering account of Mormonism, which has been the subject of modern controversy but was accepted at the time.
10. The scarlet tanager is a brightly colored bird native to which continent?

Answer: North America

The scientific name of the scarlet tanager, Piranga olivacea, means "the olive-colored one", and was obviously based on the plumage of a female or immature male, which are olive in color, rather than the scarlet plumage of the adult male.

It is related to both the cardinal and summer tanager, which are also red birds.
