Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Over the course of several novels from JK Rowling, Harry Potter and his chums attend which educational institution created to teach witches and wizards?

Answer: Hogwarts

The full name of the school is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It is located in a large castle in Scotland 'tho its exact location is concealed from Muggles (non-magical mortals) by magic spells. A large coeducational student body of eleven- to eighteen-year-olds attends and lives in four "houses" in the castle. Founded in the 9th or 10th Century, the Latin motto of the school is "Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus" which means "Never Tickle a Sleeping Dragon."
2. In a 1982 American comedy film, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brian Backer, Phoebe Cates, Sean Penn and Judge Reinhold struggle through teenage angst at which Southern California high school?

Answer: Ridgemont High

There are a great many stars (and soon-to-be stars) in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" including Nicolas Cage, Forest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz, and Anthony Edwards. In order to write the script, Cameron Crowe went undercover to Clairemont High School in San Diego. One of the more memorable parts of the movie is the conflict between stoner-surfer Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn) and hard-nosed history teacher Mr. Hand (Ray Walston).
3. In the novella, the two theatrical movies and the two television programmes based on James Hilton's "Goodbye, Mister Chips," at what school did Mister Chipping teach?

Answer: Brookfield School

Mister Chipping is known to his students as "Mister Chips." He teaches at the Brookfield School in the village of Brookfield which is located in the Fenlands of England. The story was first published in 1934. The school is probably based on The Lays School in Cambridge which the author attended 1915-1918 and the character was probably based on Hilton's father (who was headmaster at Chapel End School) and on W. H. Balgarnie who taught at Lays.
4. Which high school name, honouring a U.S. president, appears in "The Wonder Years" (1988-1993), "Freaks and Geeks" (1999-2001) and "Glee" (2009-2015)?

Answer: William McKinley High School

Some but not all of "The Wonder Years" were spent at William McKinley High School, the halls of which were graced by Kevin Arnold (played by Fred Savage), Paul Pfeiffer (played by Josh Saviano) and Gwendolyn "Winnie" Cooper (played by Danica McKellar). NBC cancelled "Freaks and Geeks" after broadcasting only 12 episodes, all set at William McKinley High School in Detroit. In Fox-TV's "Glee," the songsters of New Directions are drawn from and represent William McKinley High School.
5. Both Bret Easton Ellis' 1987 novel and writer-director Roger Avary's 2002 film follow the highly-convoluted love triangle between three students at which fictional college in New Hampshire?

Answer: Camden College

Camden College is every liberal-arts school on the East Coast of the United States. Lauren Hynde, Paul Denton, and Sean Bateman are not exactly every liberal-arts student. In "Rules of Attraction," their sexual adventures and misadventures are rather long on depravity. The film was recut and rereleased several times in an effort to change its rating.
6. Eve Arden starred on both the CBS radio (1948-1957) version and the CBS-TV version (1952-1956) of "Our Miss Brooks." At which high school did Miss Brooks (and Mister Boynton) teach?

Answer: Madison High

"Our Miss Brooks" was rather a ground-breaker in the sense that it showed an independent capable career woman who was neither a ditz nor dependent upon a male character. The TV show won the Emmy in 1956 and was made into a feature-length movie by Warner Brothers the same year. Spoiler: Miss Brooks and Mister Boynton finally got married.
7. In 2014, DC Comics launched a new series within the Batman mythos about Olive Silverlock and her teen-age friends who attend which prestigious private preparatory school?

Answer: Gotham Academy

Olive is a second-year student. Her mother is locked up across the street in the Arkham Asylum as a criminally insane person. Batman was instrumental in placing her there, which Olive resents. Olive and her chums are part of a detective club formed at the academy.
8. Adam Sandler plays Bobby Boucher in "The Waterboy" (1998) set at what fictitious institution of higher learning?

Answer: South Central Louisiana State University

Boucher (pronounced boo-SHAY) becomes the water boy of the Mud Dogs football team at South Central Louisiana State University. The team is poor; the players must share equipment. The cheerleaders are alcoholic. They are on a 41-game losing streak. But Bobby becomes a football player and saves the day for the team in the Bourbon Bowl. Sandler was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor for his work in this motion picture.
9. British author Rudyard Kipling's book of stories "Stalky and Company" (1899) is set at what boys' boarding school?

Answer: It is unnamed but called "The Coll" by the boys

While Kipling's collection of stories is about adolescents at a British residential school, it is not necessarily juvenile literature. The cruelty, the bullying and the violence are not particularly appropriate to those of tender years. The book is nonetheless quite wonderfully funny as a send-up of British ways at the turn of the century and is written in Kipling's most enjoyable style (for those who enjoy Kipling's style, anyway).
10. In "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1991), Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones Jr. is a professor of archaeology at what Ivy League school?

Answer: Barnett College

Barnett College, established in 1823, is located in Fairfield, New York. Professor Jones' office is in Hamilton Hall. Jones first taught at Marshall College in Bedford, Connecticut, but, by 1938, left Marshall for Barnett, from which he had returned by the 1950s.
