Senegal is located in west Africa and has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. The 'CIA World Fact Book' gives Senegal's coastline as being 534Km long, which makes it the 93rd longest coastline in the world.

Answer: 14

There are 14 Regions in Senegal, and each one is overseen by an elected Regional Council. Each Region takes its name from the Regional Capital.

Answer: The Gambia

The Gambia is a very small country with an area of just over 4000 square miles and an estimated population in 2009 of 1.7 million. Apart from an 80km coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, the country is surrounded by Senegal.

Answer: Kora and Balafon

The title of Senegal's national anthem is 'Pincez Tous vos Koras, Frappez les Balafons', which translates as 'Everyone strum your koras, strike the balafons'. The kora is classed as a 'bridge harp' because it is played with both hands on the strings like a harp but it has a bridge like a violin or guitar. Koras have 21 strings, 11 are played by the left hand and 10 are played by the right hand.

The balafon is a tuned percussion instrument similar to the marimba and xylophone. It consists of wooden keys mounted over resonators to create the sound the keys are struck with padded sticks.

There are groups of Wolof people in The Gambia and Mauritania, as well as in Senegal. Answer: The Lions of Teranga

"Teranga" is the Wolof word for hospitality, something that is felt to be an important part of the Senegalese national identity which is why the national soccer team is nicknamed 'The Lions of Teranga'. The Senegalese national team have reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, losing to Cameroon in 2002. In 2002 they also reached the quarter finals of the Fifa World Cup.
