Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Daniel Defoe's novel "Robinson Crusoe," the protagonist saves a Carib Indian from cannibals and the man gratefully becomes his manservant. What name did Crusoe give him?

Answer: Friday

Crusoe was, at first, unable to communicate with the Indian so he named him Friday in honour of the day of the week on which they fortuitously met. This is the literary source of the popular expressions "Man Friday" and, derivatively, "Gal Friday." Friday accompanies Crusoe to England when they are rescued, which is the predicate for the sequel.
2. The Cisco Kid was a sort of Hispanic Robin Hood figure on American radio and television; who was his Mexican sidekick?

Answer: Pancho

"The Cisco Kid" was created by O. Henry in a short story published in 1907. Cisco and his partner Pancho rode the Old West in a radio series 1942-1955. The television series starred Duncan Renaldo as Cisco and Leo Carrillo as Pancho and ran from 1950 to 1956. In 1955, it was the filmed television programme most popular with American children.
3. When rocker Harry Nilsson sings "Me and my Arrow," he is describing the sidekick to which animated character?

Answer: Oblio

In the film "The Point" (1971), a father tells his son about a land where everyone has a pointed head except Oblio, whose head is round. An evil character declares Oblio to be an outlaw and banishes him and his faithful canine companion Arrow to the Pointless Forest. Voices include Ringo Starr and Dustin Hoffman.
4. Sometimes even a family member can be a sidekick. In the Old Testament, who was Moses' brother, the first priest in Israel, and spokesman for Moses?

Answer: Aaron

According to Exodus 6:28-7:7, Moses had a speech impediment and complained to the Lord that Pharaoh would not listen to a guy who stuttered. The Lord directed that Moses' older brother Aaron speak for him to Pharaoh. The boys did well as a team except for the part where Aaron led the people into golden-calf worship while Moses was away on business.
5. Jimmy Neutron is a Boy Genius with a movie (2001) and an animated TV series (2002-2006) to his credit. Who is his robotic canine companion?

Answer: Goddard

Goddard is a robot dog who loves lug nuts and hates cats. He is intensely loyal to Jimmy and is able to speak with his voice. Jimmy built Goddard and loves him dearly. The silver dog's name is derived from the American professor and inventor Dr. Robert Hutchings Goddard, sometimes considered the father of the American space programme.
6. Bitty Shram was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her role as Adrian Monk's nurse and personal assistant on "Monk" (USA, 2002-2009). What was her character's name?

Answer: Sharona Fleming

A personal nurse was necessary to bring Adrian Monk out of his coma and enable him to return to a life of criminal investigation. Sharona Fleming was the registered nurse who succeeded in that task and went on to assist him as a companion and sidekick in his investigations. She was replaced in Season 3 by Traylor Howard playing another nurse, Natalie Jane Teeger.
7. In addition to his team work with his brothers, Groucho Marx (1890-1977) hosted a game show called "You Bet Your Life" on both radio and television. Who was his announcer, straight man and spokesperson for sponsor DeSoto automobiles?

Answer: George Fenneman

"You Bet Your Life" ran on radio from 1947 to 1960 and on television from 1950-1961. Groucho ad libbed most of the contestant interviews and played off of George Fenneman as his straight man. Fenneman was born in Beijing, China, and raised in California.

He was the only announcer on "You Bet Your Life." Groucho called him "the perfect straight man." He was also one of two announcers on Dragnet on television: "The story you are about to see is true ..."
8. The Borden Dairy Company developed Elsie, a cartoon cow, in 1936 to symbolize their business. Who was her cartoon bull mate?

Answer: Elmer

Elsie the Cow was the spokescow for the Borden Dairy Company. Later, the company developed Elmer the Bull to be the spokesbull for Elmer's Glue. Elsie and Elmer had four progeny: Beulah and Beauregard (1948) and the twins Larabee and Lobelia (1957). When J.M. Smucker bought out Borden in the 1990s, Elsie was transferred to Eagle Brand, the condensed milk brand of Smuckers.
9. Comedienne and actress Shari Lewis had many talents: author, musician, classical music conductor, and puppeteer. Who was her sock-puppet companion?

Answer: Lamb Chop

Shari Lewis (1933-1998) was an immensely talented performer with accomplishments in many arenas. Her simple sock puppet Lamb Chop was her best known partner. She won Arthur Godfrey's "Talent Scouts" programme on CBS in 1952, which launched her national career as a ventriloquist.

Her show replaced "The Howdy Doody Show" on NBC and ran from 1960 to 1963. Her PBS show ran from 1992 to 1997. Lamb Chop was once allowed to testify before a Congressional committee on the subject of children's television.
10. The Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-1806 was guided by a French-Canadian fur trapper and his Shoshone wife. Who this Native American woman?

Answer: Sacajawea

Lewis and Clark hired Toussaint Charbonneau and his wife Sacajawea, then living among the Hidatsas, to translate for and guide the Corps of Discovery. Sacajawea had her first-born son on the journey. She traveled with them all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Her statue with her baby Jean-Baptiste stands at the Clatsop National Memorial, Netul Landing, in the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park in Astoria, Oregon, near the mouth of the Columbia River.
