Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following techniques would use a kiln?

Answer: Lost Wax Casting

In lost wax castings, the kiln is used to temper the plaster-like mold, and burn off the wax model used to make it. Hence the 'lost wax' part.
2. If you didn't know the history of a piece of gold jewelry, but needed to make a simple repair, which of the following types of solder would you most likely use?

Answer: Easy Solder

The harder the solder, the higher the melting point. In a piece who's history is unknown, you want to use the lowest melting point available, so as to minimize damage to previous solder joints.
3. What is the term for thin, soft metal strips often used to set cabochon stones?

Answer: Bezel

In a bezel setting, a thin metal band surrounds the entire outside edge of a stone, as opposed to a prong setting, which, appropriately, uses prongs to hold the stone in a claw-like manner.
4. What type of jewelry would you most likely be making if you used a bail in your design?

Answer: Pendant

Bails are the part of a pendant which actually come in contact with the chain. They are often 'V' shaped, but can sometimes be quite elaborate.
5. Which of the following tools is used to shape bracelets, rings and some necklaces, by holding the metal against it and hammering?

Answer: Mandrel

The mandrel is a variation on an anvil. It is a hard metal tool which comes in many shapes and sizes. There are mandrels for shaping bangle bracelets, cuff bracelets, rings of all sizes, and cuff necklaces, just to name a few.
6. Which of the following is not a type of clasp?

Answer: Jacket

A jacket is a ring, earring or pendant made to fit around or over another to make it more elaborate without actually changing it.
7. The term used to designate wire thickness is 'gauge.' The higher the number, the __________ (thicker or thinner) the wire?

Answer: Thinner

Most commonly used in the US is the American Wire Gauge. This is a standard scale, from 0-36 gauge. The numbers originally represented the number of times a wire was drawn through the wire machine. Each time the wire was run through, the diameter was decreased. So, wires run through more times were thinner than those run through fewer times.
8. Which of the following is NOT a common 'fuel gas' for torches used in jewelry-smithing applications?

Answer: Helium

Most torches use two gas lines. One is for the fuel gas, which provides the heat. The other is almost always oxygen, and is used to regulate the size and quality of the flame.
9. Which of the following stones, if properly cleaned and unenhanced, can withstand the heat of soldering?

Answer: Diamond

Diamonds are the only stone which, assuming they are unenhanced and VERY clean, can withstand direct heat from a torch. In some circumstances, rubies and sapphires can withstand low levels of heat from a torch.
10. French hooks are used for what type of jewelry item?

Answer: Earrings

The french hook is a type of wire used most commonly for dangle-type earrings. Unlike posts and lever-backs, the french hook has no mechanism for holding the earring on, so relies on a long back wire. Some people do use special rubber backs on their french hook earrings, particularly those with thin earlobes.
