There is no official meaning but the unofficial meanings are: Red - bloodshed, Blue - skies, Green - agriculture, Black and White - races, Yellow - gold mining. The shape of the flag with the sideways "Y" does officially indicate the unifying of the nation.

The springbuck (English)/springbok (Afrikaans) is a herding buck which stands 75 cm high and weighs about 40 kg. This antelope is characterized by the dark red-brown band along its flanks which separates the fawn-brown upperparts from the white underparts.

Its hindquarters also appear to be slightly higher than the shoulders. When danger looms, springbok have the habit of repeatedly springing up to seven feet in the air, hence their name.

In 1961 South Africa withdrew from the Commonwealth and in doing so declared themselves the Republic of South Africa. South Africa rejoined the Commonwealth on 1 June 1994.

The Witwatersrand ridge in Gauteng is 100kms long and 3.6kms deep, and gold has been mined in this area since 1886. This ridge continues to yield vast quantities of gold from a number of mines that still run in the area.

Answer: Erasmus Jacobs

A young Erasmus Jacobs was playing near the Orange River in Hopetown when he discovered a glittering stone. This proved to be a 21.25 carat diamond which was finally bought for five hundred pounds sterling by the Governor of the Cape, Sir Philip Wodehouse. It was later cut intp a 10.73 carat stone known as the "Eureka Diamond"
