10. What unusual skin tone were the Fugates of Kentucky known to have at one time?

Answer: Blue

The Fugates were a large family that lived in relative isolation in the Appalachian mountains of Kentucky. It was found that a large number of them had a disease called Methemoglobinemia. Due to their isolation, it was carried from one generation to another.

The disease is caused by an enzyme deficiency, and when it was discovered, an enzyme called methylene blue was given to them and they "pinked" right up. Nowadays since the family has moved up and out, the gene is not as dominant, so chances are you won't meet up with a blue Fugate.
