quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. June 7: The bark of the willow tree, if extracted, CANNOT help with which of these symptoms?

Answer: Nausea

The willow tree produces acetylsalicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin. Its effects have been known for over 2400 years and are mentioned by Hippocrates. But it was not until Edward Stone isolated the drug in 1763 and not until chemists at Bayer Corporation in 1893 synthesised the drug that it became commonly used. It is perhaps the most widely used drug in the world.

There a number of counter indications on the use of aspirin. For instance, persons with pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes and asthma, should use with caution. Aspirin has been linked to Reye's syndrome in children. Overuse can cause stomach bleeding. As one researcher said, "The Federal Food and Drug Administration probably would not approve aspirin today".
2. June 9: Eight foods have been identified as the cause 90% of food allergies. Which these is NOT on that list?

Answer: Apples

Fruits are not on the list, but may be the cause in isolated cases. The other five are eggs, tree nuts, milk, soy, and fish.
3. July 1: Where is the largest shopping centre located in North or South America?

Answer: West Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Edmonton is larger than any other shopping mall in North America, but it is dwarfed by many in China and the Middle East. For instance, New South China Mall, located in Dongguan, covers 7.1 million square feet with 1000+ stores, while Edmonton has about 5.3 million square feet and 800+ shops (2016 data).
4. July 7: Many television shows have used New Jersey as a background. Which of these does NOT have New Jersey as a primary location?

Answer: Keeping Up with the Kardashians

In order to protect the Kardashians, their location is not published but believed to be the upscale town of Calabasas, California, an area renowned for its lavish homes and celebrity residents.

New Jersey is the Garden State and has been the backdrop for "The Sopranos" (1999-2007), considered by many as one of the best television crime dramas. "Boardwalk Empire" (2010-2014) told the nostalgic tale of the Prohibition War while "House" (2004-2012) combined the essential medical drama with the unraveling of complex medical issues.
5. July 10: In what 20th century decade did we first see the modern Peace Symbol?

Answer: 1950s

The Peace Symbol came from an organization that called itself the Direct Action Committee. The artist was Gerald Holtom who combined the letters "N" and "D" as used in semaphore code that stood for nuclear disarmament.

There have been many peace symbols prior to that time including olive branches, broken rifles, and the dove. Picasso's lithograph, La Colombe (The Dove), actually a pigeon, was chosen as the emblem for the World Peace Congress in Paris in April 1949.

A legend concerns planners for a high school prom deciding to use the peace symbol as the theme. After the decoration was done, the principal noted that they had used the logo of Mercedes-Benz.
6. July 19: You may see the letters 'YKK' nearly every day. Where would you most commonly find them?

Answer: On zippers

YKK stands for Yoshida Kôgyô Kabushik, or translated Yoshida Manufacturing Shareholding Company. It has become international with 109 YKK companies in 71 countries in 2016.

YKK is in no way related to the 1999 computer panic called Y2K.
7. July 29: Beavers have transparent eye lids.

Answer: True

These enable beavers to see under water. Beavers also have ear and nose valves that close automatically under water, thus helping them to submerge about four minutes.
8. August 4: Originally, Coke contained cocaine that was removed in 1903. What soft drink contained lithium citrate, a mood altering drug, until removed in 1950?

Answer: 7 Up

7 Up's original name was Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda. No one knows why
7 Up was chosen. It came on the market in 1929 a few days before the Wall Street crash. The modern formula, manufacturer, and distribution are under the umbrella of the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, which also includes the Cadbury Schweppes.
9. August 21: Antarctica contains the largest polar desert in the world. What is the largest non-polar desert?

Answer: Sahara Desert

A desert is a barren area of land where little precipitation occurs and consequently living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life.

The Sahara Desert is by far the largest non-polar desert in the world.

Sahara Desert is 3.5 million square miles.
Arabian Desert is 1.0 million square miles.
Great Victoria Desert is .25 million square miles.
Kalahari Desert is .22 million square miles.

These are dwarfed by the polar deserts.

Antarctica Desert is 5.4 million square miles.

The Arctic Desert is entirely ice over sea water, estimated at 1.5 million square miles.
10. September 8: What artist or group had number one best-selling albums in six decades, including the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, 2000s, and 2010s?

Answer: Barbra Streisand

Active for over half a century, Streisand has had more than 30 top selling albums, including "Partners" in 2014. Her first was "People" in 1964. Whenever a new Streisand album is announced, there is a surge of interest by her loyal fans.
