Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where might you find a bear market, a stag market and a bull market all in the same place but not at the same time?

Answer: At the stock exchange

A 'bull market' is when share prices rapidly increase in value for several days. A 'bear market' is when share prices drop sharply in value for several days. A 'stag' is somebody who isn't really bothered whether the market is going up or down as a whole.

They tend to look at individual company shares that they believe will increase in value in the short term and then buy and quickly sell them at a profit (hopefully).
2. What 2 word term describes the speed required to overcome the gravitational pull of a planet or star?

Answer: Escape Velocity

To escape Earth's gravitational pull, a speed of around 11.2 km per second would be required which is done on a regular basis today. To escape our solar system, a speed of 500-600 km per second would be needed. The spacecraft Voyager 1, launched in 1977, crossed into interstellar space in 2013, becoming the first man-made object to escape our solar system.

The speed required was generated by using the gravitational pull of the other planets in our solar system in a spiral trajectory.
3. What connects a bay in Wales, an item of clothing and a leader in the Crimean War?

Answer: Cardigan

Cardigan Bay is the large bay on the Western edge of Wales with the town of Aberystwyth at its centre. A cardigan is a knitted, open front garment usually fastened with buttons or a zip. James Thomas Brudenell, the 7th Earl of Cardigan led the famous Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854 at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War.
4. The term 'Moonies' refers to members of what church?

Answer: Unification Church

The Family Federation for World Peace and Unification as it is now called was founded in 1954 by Sun Myung Moon. It is commonly called the Unification Church for short. No prizes for guessing why members are called 'Moonies'.
5. How many years after the Battle of Hastings did England win the FIFA World Cup?

Answer: 900

The Battle of Hastings was in 1066. William the Conqueror defeated King Harold. He became the first Norman King of England and ruled until his death in 1087. England won the FIFA World Cup in 1966 when they beat West Germany 4-2 after extra time in the final.
6. What Papal name was the first to be used by more than twenty popes?

Answer: John

Pope John XXII was elected in 1244. Due to some confusion in the 11th century, it was realised later that an error in numbering Pope John XVI to John XX had occurred and they were renumbered John XV to XIX. Pope John XXI and Pope John XXII were not however renumbered and there was therefore no Pope John XX. Pope John XXIII, who died in 1963 is regarded as one of the greatest of all popes.

He was beatified in 2000 and in 2013 was declared a saint.
7. The first messages that used Braille were communicated in what language?

Answer: French

The writing system, Braille, used by the blind, was created by Louis Braille in 1824. He had lost his own sight in an accident when aged just 15. It consists of cells containing 6 dots which when raised or lowered enable the reader to identify the letter of the alphabet, (or even a number), being represented.

His original system assigned a specific pattern to each letter of the alphabet. Being a Frenchman, it is hardly surprising that he used French to write his first messages. Braille has undergone changes since that time where certain characters can be used to express whole words.

This is known as a contraction and is aimed at making Braille faster to read for those skilled enough.
8. In 1865, a mountain whose height had been determined by the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India of 1856 was changed from 'Peak XV' to what?

Answer: Everest

The Royal Geographical Society accepted a recommendation from the Surveyor General of India, Andrew Waugh, that it be named after his predecessor George Everest. The height had been calculated to be 29,002 feet. The actual height measured using modern technology has been adjusted to 29,029 feet above sea level.
9. Which comedy panel game has been running on BBC Radio 4 since 1972?

Answer: I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue

Humphrey Lyttelton, a British Jazz musician, was selected to host the program in 1972 and he did so until shortly before his death in 2008. It was designed to be a comedic parody of a normal panel game and judging from its longevity has been very successful in that regard.
10. The oldest corporate logo in the world still in use today is owned by which company?

Answer: Stella Artois

Stella Artois is a Belgium Brewer. The logo can be traced back to 1366 when the Den Hoorn brewery in Leuven, Belgium was founded. It consisted of a horn used to attract customers. The company was bought out by Sebastian Artois in 1708 and he renamed it after his family surname.

The word Stella was added in 1926. The current Stella Artois logo still incorporates the original horn logo from all those years ago. Twinings Tea goes back to 1787, Bass Ale to 1876 and Levi Strauss to 1886.
