Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Broadly, there are two types of owls. One is called 'true owls' of the family Strigidae. The other is from the family Tytonidae. By what name are these owls known?

Answer: Barn Owls

Owls are solitary and nocturnal. They have a broad head, binocular vision, and binaural hearing. Its silent flight make it a dangerous bird of prey for small mammals, insects, and fish.
2. Who was the first United States president to have his inauguration televised?

Answer: Harry Truman

It was 38 degrees on a sunny and windy day on January 20, 1949 when ten million viewers saw for the first time a president being sworn in. Rabbi Samuel Thurman lead the prayer and Frederick Vinson, Chief Justice, swore in Harry Truman on the East Portico of the Capitol Building. Truman wore a morning coat, striped trousers, and a top hat.
3. Coffee is brewed from beans.

4. In terms of lives lost, what is believed to the most fatal maritime sinking?

Answer: MV Wilhelm Gustloff 1945

The MV Wilhelm Gustloff was a German passenger ship that was sunk by a Russian torpedo in 1945 in the Baltic Sea. The exact toll on lives could not be determined as it was being used as a rescue ship to evacuate civilians, refugees, German soldiers and sailors from East Prussia that had been surrounded by the Red Army. The low estimate is 5,000 but likely nearer to 9000.
5. What useful tool did Charles Moncky allegedly invent?

Answer: Monkey wrench

Charles Moncky lived in Baltimore and in 1858 he invented what was later to be called the monkey wrench, although this has been disputed by some researchers. He sold his patent for 2000 dollars and retired.
6. In the United States postal ZIP Codes speed the delivery of mail. In general, you would find the highest ZIP Code numbers in what part of the country?

Answer: West

With some minor exceptions, ZIP Codes are the lowest on the eastern seaboard (Boston, New York, Washington D.C.) and highest on the western seaboard (Los Angeles, Portland, Honolulu).
7. In what US state was the first seat of government of a European country established?

Answer: New Mexico

The oldest seat of government was Spain's Governor's Palace in Santa Fe, New Mexico, constructed in 1610. This was at least ten years before the English colonialized the east coast.
8. What was God's reply to Cain when he asked if he was his brother's keeper?

Answer: Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.

God does not answer Cain's question directly but instead confronts him with his deed.
9. Worldwide, the most common word heard in many languages is 'okay' or 'ok'. Many theories exist as to the derivation of the word. What scholars agree on is that it is of American origin. Which of these is NOT one of those theories?

Answer: Pioneers shouted "On to Kansas" as they traveled west

Martin Van Buren seceded Andrew Jackson as President of the United in 1837. Van Buren was from Old Kinderhook, New York. People who were in Van Buren's inner circle were called 'OK', a reference to his home town.

The Choctaw language has the words 'oke', 'hoke, and okeh' which meant 'as it is'. This was spoken in what is now south central United States. Some believe that its use spread to English speaking settlers.

Boston abbreviation fad was to overuse abbreviations, particularly in writing. One source said: OFM "our first men," and used expressions like NG, "no go," GT, "gone to Texas," and SP, "small potatoes." Many of the abbreviated expressions were exaggerated misspellings, a stock in trade of the humorists of the day. One predecessor of okay was OW, "oll wright." OK's original presentation as "all correct" was later varied with spellings such as "Oll Korrect" or even "Ole Kurreck"."

Words with a similar meaning have been found in at least 18 languages worldwide.

I made up the "On to Kansas" thing.
10. Yvonne Milanaro in high school sat behind Alan Ameche and became his high school sweetheart and they married after high school and had two children. Alan said she was the cutest girl he ever saw. Alan went on to become an All-American running back at the University of Wisconsin and won the 1954 Heisman trophy as the best football player in the country. After a successful professional career, his retirement was cut short by a heart attack at age 55 in 1988. In 1996, she remarried to a man who was also a Heisman trophy winner. Whom did she marry?

Answer: Glenn Davis (1946) Army

Yvonne met Davis in 1995 at a gathering of Heisman Trophy families and were married a year later. She was with him at this death in 2005. She said: (he) went off dialysis. He had gone through so much... it was the first time he didn't look at me and say, 'What do you think?' I'm glad he didn't because that was a decision he had to make."

Davis was a three All-American at Army. He had an average of over eight yards per carry. He was Mr. Outside to Doc Blanchard's Mr. Inside. After West Point he fulfilled his obligation of three years of military service. Knee problems prevented a professional career. He was once engaged to actress Elizabeth Taylor and later married actress Terry Moore.

Yvonne's daughter married the brother of John Cappelletti, Heisman Trophy winner 1973 from Penn State.
