Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nursery rhymes can be fun, and their catchy phrases and delightful descriptions often remain with us for a lifetime. Provide the next line of this common verse: "There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile. He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile. He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse. ___."

Answer: "And they all lived together in a little crooked house."

This nursery rhyme is of British origin, and sources date its beginning to be during the reign of King Charles I who reigned between 1625 and 1649. As with many poems and stories, this one is more than just words for children. It is rich with double meaning and provides insight into the culture of seventeenth century England. Supposedly, this rhyme is a commentary on the co-existence of the Scottish and English.

For example, "the crooked stile" refers to the border between Scotland and England. In summary, the line at the end of the verse is: "And they all lived together in a little crooked house".

It assures the two countries they could enjoy a peaceful coexistence, warped though it may be.
2. So much the epitome of crooked, twisted, gnarled, twined and/or knotted, the vine of one fruit can be a stand-in for those very words. The photo shows a rather straight example, but what is the fruit known to grow on the twisted vine? A variety of products can be made from it - even some tasty fermented beverages!

Answer: Grapes

Of course, it is the grape! Without effort the word grapevine conjures images of gnarly, twisted - yes, even crooked - branches hanging rich with wonderful fruit that may become jam, jelly, juice or wine. There is a city within the Metroplex of Dallas-Fort Worth (Texas, USA) named Grapevine.

Its downtown historic district is an enticing mixture of things to see and do. There are upscale shops, galleries of fine art, restaurants offering scrumptious eats and even bronze statues paying homage to three local residents who roller skated on those streets with their dog many years ago.
3. The candy shown in the photo has a distinctive flavor that seems to be perceived as either pleasant and desirable or distasteful and nauseating - no middle ground in preference. What is the widely accepted name for this twisted candy stick that is more than likely flavored with anise than with the root of its plant name?

Answer: Licorice

Licorice - true licorice from the root of the plant with the same name - has been eaten for centuries. As with many candies, this one was initially consumed for its touted health benefits rather than as a treat. Through the ages, licorice has been credited with benefiting those who suffer from a wide variety of ailments, from upset stomach to hair loss.

In many parts of the modern world (definitely in the United States), most of the candy sold as licorice has been made with anise flavoring rather than with licorice.
4. Using a King James translation of the Bible, it would appear one gospel writer borrowed a phrase (almost word-for-word) from Isaiah 40:4 when it was written: "Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth". In which gospel would this verse be found? Its author is the one believed to have been a physician.

Answer: Luke

The verse quoted in the question can be found in the New Testament of the Bible; taken from Luke, chapter 3, verse 5. As with many of the early writers and scholars, very little is irrevocably known about Luke. Most sources agree he was of Greek or Hellenic descent, that he was born in or near Antioch (Greece), and it was his relationship with (the Apostle) Paul that led to his conversion to and conviction of Christianity.
5. Not everyone has a perfect alignment of their teeth naturally. Misalignment of teeth can be more than a cosmetic concern. It can cause other health problems, too. What is the medical name for "crooked teeth" or "poor bite"?

Answer: Malocclusion

Malocclusion refers to teeth that are crooked, misaligned, twisted or poorly positioned. Malocclusion may also be used to refer to teeth/jaw alignments that are commonly called over-bite and under-bite. Poorly positioned teeth may present more of a challenge for proper dental hygiene, thus the risk of cavities, tooth decay and gingivitis are higher. If crooked teeth cause the inability to chew properly, it may result in poor digestion and may be painful if there is abnormal tension on teeth and jaws.
6. In the photo is an item that is believed to be one of the oldest foods created purely as a snack. The flour based morsel has found its way into modern culture as a staple that can be found almost anywhere people gather for entertainment. What is this twisted treat that can be eaten soft or hard, hot or cold, salted or unsalted, plain or flavored - to mention only a few dichotomies?

Answer: Pretzel

Ah, the twisted pretzel. It has been a snack favorite for centuries. Many sources tell us the pretzel was developed as a snack as early as the seventh century. The two-looped, knot-shaped, hard pretzel is often mentioned as the most popular from among of the vast variety of pretzels that are available.

In the twenty-first century, those mindful of the benefits of a lower fat, lower calorie diet often consider the pretzel an acceptable snack.
7. Lombard Street in California (U.S.A.) has often worn the moniker "crookedest street in the world", yet one of its city's travel and tourism promoters says that it is NOT the crookedest or the steepest. They give that accolade to nearby Vermont Street. In what U.S. city are these two streets?

Answer: San Francisco

As shown in the photo, Lombard Street (in San Francisco, California) is very steep and said to have a section with eight hairpins turns in only one block. Where it ranks on lists - particularly those of the entire planet - is debatable whether considering "how steep" and/or "how crooked". What Lombard Street does have is an amazing proximity to spectacular scenery. And, its recommended five miles per hour speed limit (in certain sections) allows for a pace to enjoy the view!
8. In the Old Testament of Bible, Job is often identified by his trials and tribulations. Just as often he is attributed as a man of patience and faith. Job gave acclamation and thanks to God. Finish this sentence that is from Chapter 26, verse 13 of the Book of Job. "By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked ___."

Answer: serpent

Although the photo shows a snake - quite the earthly being - the verse is taken out of context. Here Job is said to be referring to a group or several groups of stars (constellations) in the pattern of a snake. Many of the ancient scholars who studied the night time skies - as Job did - noticed a pattern in the stars of the Milky Way Galaxy that reminded them of a giant snake or a dragon that encircled the earth.
9. Not "The Long and Crooked Road" but "The Long and Winding Road" was a US Billboard Hot 100 chart topper (i.e., ranked number one) in July 1970. It was a song from the album titled "Let It Be", which also reached the number one spot on the US Billboard 200. Which iconic British group released those best sellers?

Answer: The Beatles

The Beatles released the album "Let It Be" in May of 1970, weeks AFTER the group had announced their split. But whether "Let It Be" was to be considered the "last album" of The Beatles has met with debate through the years. Some of the music on the album "Let It Be" had been recorded (by The Beatles) before they recorded the album "Abbey Road", which had been released in the second half of the previous year - 1969, that is. "The Long and Winding Road" did perform well as a single, but as with many aspects of lives and endeavors of The Beatles, that song, too, was not without its own tumult.
10. In 1960, American born singer-songwriter Chubby Checker released a song that literally created its own dance craze. What was the song's title in which Chubby Checker sang, "Take me by my little hand and go like this"?

Answer: The Twist

Chubby Checker was NOT the first recording artist to release "The Twist" but it soon became HIS signature song. In the early 1960s, "The Twist" was the first single to reach the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 charts in two different chart appearances - as the same release. "The Twist" topped the (US) charts (for Chubby Checker) in 1960 and then again early 1962. Like the Hustle, the Slide and other familiar dances, the Twist has remained a popular staple for many gatherings - even decades after its initial popularity.
