Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Grab your helmet and take the field for Sports. Which sports accomplishment does not have "50" as a total?

Answer: The number of touchdown passes Peyton Manning threw in the 2013 regular season.

Peyton Manning (b. 1976) is a former NFL quarterback with the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos. In 2013, Manning passed for 55 touchdowns and 5,437 yards. At the time of his retirement he held most of the NFL quarterback records including career passing yards (71,940) and career touchdown passes (539). He led each of his teams to a Super Bowl victory. Football players are supposed to wear helmets when they play, and play on a field.

Brady Anderson (b. 1964) is a former MLB outfielder, primarily with the Baltimore Orioles. He hit 210 home runs during his career. The 50 home runs in 1996 was a standout year as his next best total in a year was 24 in 1999. In 1996, he hit the 50th home run in his first at-bat in the final game of the season.

Maurice "Rocket" Richard (1921-2000) was a long-time right wing for the Montreal Canadiens of the NHL. He scored a total of 544 goals during his career (1942-1960), a record at the time of his retirement. The amazing thing about his 50 goals was that they were accomplished in only 50 games.

Wilt Chamberlain (1936-1999) was a long time center in the NBA (1959-1973) with the Philadelphia/San Francisco Warriors, Philadelphia Seventy Sixers and the Los Angeles Lakers. He scored 50.4 points per game and made 25.7 rebounds during the 1961-1962 season. On March 02, 1962 he scored 100 points against the New York Knicks in a game--an NBA record which may never be exceeded.
2. Hey, Hey, here's a Television question. Which of these television choices is not 50?

Answer: The number of episodes of "The Monkees"

"The Monkees" ran for 58 episodes during its run on NBC (1966-1968). The Monkees, often described as the "Pre-Fab Four" were Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, Mike Nesmith, and Peter Tork. The show was a vehicle for the Monkees' songs, many of which became Top 40 hits, including the theme song of the show, which included the line "Hey, hey, we're the Monkees!"

"Batman" ran for 120 episodes over three seasons (1966-1968) and starred Adam West and Burt Ward. Although Mr. Freeze only appeared in three two-part episodes, he was portrayed each time by a different actor--George Sanders, Otto Preminger, and Eli Wallach. Mr. Freeze was based on the character of Mr. Zero in the "Batman" comic book series. In the episodes, a room that Mr. Freeze was in would be lit blue in the cold areas (safe for him) and red in the warm areas (safe for other people).

"Win Ben Stein's Money" ran for 715 episodes and six seasons (1997-2003). Ben Stein started the show with $5,000 which would gradually be won by the contestants. An interesting feature of the show was that in Rounds 2 and 3, Ben would compete as a "common contestant" to try to keep some of his money. Any of the $5,000 that was not taken by the winning contestant was Ben's to keep.

"The Texaco Star Theatre" started as a radio show with Fred Allen. It ran from 1948-1956 as a television variety program with Milton "Uncle Miltie" Berle as the host for most of its run. In the 1950-1951 season, the show was number one in the Nielsen ratings with a 61.6 share.

In the equation 2x + 4y = 200 we can substitute 25 for y which gives us 2x + 4(25) = 200. If we subtract 100 (the product of 4 X 25) from each side we are left with 2x = 100. When we divide each side by 2 we are left with x = 50.
6. Fiddle-dee-dee, a question about History. Which statement about 50 A.D. is not true?

Answer: While Nero was Roman Emperor, Rome burned.

Nero (Nerō Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus) (reigned 54-68 AD) is one of the more infamous emperors in Roman history. Several accounts of the fire (July 18-19, 64 A.D.) exist--some say that Nero caused the fire and others suggest that he led efforts to stop it. Nero himself tried to cast blame for the fire on the Christian population of Rome. Some accounts describe Nero as playing his lyre as the city burned. The association of Nero with the violin or fiddle is historically inaccurate as that was not invented until centuries later.

Answer: The number of stars on the United States flag in 1950

Since 1818, the United States flag has had 13 stripes, seven red and six white, for the original 13 colonies/states. The number of stars in the blue field on the upper left represents the then current number of states. In 1950, the United States had 48 states. Alaska became a state on January 3, 1959 and Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959. New stars are traditionally added on July 4 of a calendar. The 1959-1960 flag had 49 stars. Answer: Standing Liberty on the obverse

The Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar was minted from 1916-1930. It was designed by Hermon MacNeil. The original figure of Liberty was bare breasted, but this was changed in 1917 when a new version was created covering her torso in armor. The coin was replaced by the Washington Quarter Dollar.

The Ben Franklin Half Dollar was minted from 1948-1963. It features Franklin's bust on the obverse and the Liberty Bell on the reverse. Some people criticize the small bald eagle that was included on the reverse to meet statute law, but I think it's appropriate. Franklin did not want the bald eagle to be a symbol of the United States, preferring the wild turkey.

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar was minted from 1916-1947. Designed by Adolph Weinmann, it is often considered one of the most attractive designs ever used on a United States coin.

The Barber Half Dollar was minted from 1892-1915. Charles Barber designed the Liberty Head obverse which was also used on the Dimes and Quarter Dollars of the time.
