Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An easy one to start with! One of my favourite desserts is lemon meringue pie. Served hot with my favourite vanilla ice cream it is simply delicious! I was wondering though - of which family is the vanilla plant a member?

Answer: orchid

The vanilla plant is a member of the Orchidaceae family. It produces pods, sometimes referred to as beans, which are the fragrant parts used in cooking. Rose hips have been used to make ice cream, but dahlias, although developed as an edible plant, have simply never featured highly in the culinary stakes.

The principal food item obtained from the crocus is, of course, the very expensive spice saffron.
2. Which fictional sleuth had a secretary called Miss Lemon?

Answer: Hercule Poirot

Described as "a perfect machine", Felicity Lemon is Hercule Poirot's super efficient secretary. In the story "Hickory Dickory Dock", typing errors made by her in a letter lead Hercule Poirot to know that something is seriously amiss in her life. His investigation into the problem provides the plot for one of the most popular stories concerning Poirot.
3. A famous basketball player had the surname Lemon. But what was his unusual first name?

Answer: Meadowlark

Born Meadow George Lemon, he later adopted the name Meadowlark, and played for the Harlem Globetrotters for 22 years until he left in 1979. He was given the title "Clown Prince of Basketball" and was a firm favourite all over the world for his comic skills as well as his prodigious talent as a basketball player.

He appeared in several films before becoming a Christian and going into the ministry.
4. The film "The Lemon Drop Kid", which was released in 1951, starred which famous actor as the eponymous hero?

Answer: Bob Hope

This classic film, based on a story by Damon Runyan provided perfect material for the fast talking, wisecracking Bob Hope.
5. Mark Lemon (1807-1870) was one of the founders and first editors of which famous satirical British magazine?

Answer: Punch

Mark Lemon, as well as his work for Punch magazine, wrote prolifically for the stage and collaborated with Charles Dickens on a play called "Mr Nightingale's Diary", a one-act farce, in which the authors also played leading roles. Punch, alas, is no longer published.

The magazine saw a steep decline in sales in the late 1980's, and eventually folded in 1992. However, a surprising saviour in the shape of Harrods boss Mohammed al Fayed revived the magazine in 1996, but the mood of the country had changed, and as Punch failed to grip the nation in the way it once had, it folded again in 2002.

The other magazines mentioned are very much of the late twentieth century.
6. Which "Lemon" group had a hit with "Green Tambourine" in 1968?
