Electric eels are technically knifefish belonging to the order gymnotiformes, which also include catfish. The main difference between electric eels and true eels is the tail shape. Electric eels have a forked tail while true eels do not. The shock of the electric eel can reach up to 600 volts and is used for many reasons including communication and hunting.
