The Future's Bright Trivia Quiz

the colour's orange

The future's orange, or so the advert said. Here is a collection of various 'oranges' to test your wits. There may be some UK bias to a couple of the questions. Remember that clicking on the photos enlarges them, which may help.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The butterfly in the picture, Anthocharis cardamines, is known by which common name?

Answer: Orange tip

Only the male orange tip butterfly has the distinctive orange markings, and the black spot near where the orange and white parts of the wing meet. The female orange tip has white wings with black tips. The butterfly is common in the British Isles and can be found in Europe and parts of Asia, including Japan.

I hope the photo, obviously of a male, helped you work out the correct answer.
2. One of the original members of the band Take That had the surname of Orange. What was his first name?

Answer: Jason

Take That got together in 1990, with Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald, Robbie Williams and Jason Orange as members. Robbie left in 1995 for a successful solo career and the band split in 1996 before reforming in 2005. Jason left the band in late 2014. He has also tried his hand at acting, having appeared in a television series called 'Killer Net', which was broadcast in 1998.

Your photo clue of 'The Golden Fleece' may have reminded you that it was Jason and the Argonauts who searched for this in mythology.
3. Cape Orange is located in which of these countries?

Answer: Brazil

Although it sounds as if it should be in South Africa, or the Netherlands, Cape Orange is actually on the north east coast of Brazil, near its border with French Guiana. It is the most northerly point on the coast of the country and home to the American flamingo, Phoenicopterus ruber.

Your photo clue is of a selection of shelled nuts, including several Brazil nuts, which I hope you recognised.
4. The Pilsner beer named Oranjeboom was originally brewed in which Dutch city?

Answer: Rotterdam

The translation of Oranjeboom is orange tree, a symbol of the Dutch royal family - the House of Orange. The brewery was established in 1671, but production in Rotterdam ceased in 1989 following the first in a series of mergers and takeovers.

The picture clue is of containers, which may have pointed you towards the port of Rotterdam - one of the largest in the world. The other places listed are all large cities of The Netherlands, with Amsterdam being the capital, but are not known for their ports.
5. Since their home kit consists of orange (or amber) and black stripes, you won't be surprised by this soccer club's nickname. Which club, located in north east England, is it?

Answer: Hull City

The club was founded in 1904 as Hull City Association Football Club. It has been nicknamed the Tigers for many years and their mascot is named Roary. Attempts to officially change the club's name to Hull Tigers were rejected by the Football Association in 2014. The other clubs are located in the eastern part of England, but Newcastle United are known as the Magpies due to the black and white stripes on their kit. Sunderland are known as the Black Cats and Norwich as the Canaries.

The photo of the tiger may have helped, but only if you know the nicknames of the clubs given as options.
6. The fruits pictured are known by which name in English?

Answer: Kumquat

Kumquats originate from Asia and can be found in both round and oval varieties. Most commercial production is still in various parts of Asia, although they can be grown in warmer regions of Europe and the USA. The other fruits listed are all various shades of orange, but are much larger than the kumquat, which is around the same size as an olive.

I hope the photo was clear - the angle should have made identification reasonably easy.
7. The 2002 film 'Orange County' starred Jack Black and which other actor, the son of another actor?

Answer: Colin Hanks

The film is a comedy about the attempts of a young man, played by Hanks, to obtain entry to Stanford University. His efforts are hindered by his dysfunctional family, including a brother (Black) who takes drugs. The title refers to the home area of Hanks's character's family, in California.

Your picture clue is of wool, which can be bought in balls, skeins or hanks.
8. The War of the Oranges was a short lived conflict of 1801 when France invaded which other European nation?

Answer: Portugal

The war began in April 1801 when Portugal refused to give in to Napoleon's demands for territory. By May, Spain had added its weight to that of France in the unequal struggle, and the war was over by June. The Peace of Badajoz meant that England no longer had access to Portuguese ports and Portugal also lost some territory as well as having to make a financial settlement. The name of the war came from the actions of the Spanish commander, who sent oranges to the Spanish queen to prove he had succeeded in the invasion.

The photo is of the Portuguese flag, to help you to find the correct answer.
9. The common name for the birds pictured is based on their colouring, and begins 'orange-breasted green'. The final word is the type of bird, so can you decide which of the options is correct?

Answer: Pigeons

Treron bicinctus is the scientific name for the attractive orange-breasted green pigeon, which lives in India, Indonesia and other parts of Asia. It feeds on fruit and seeds and can be found in many tropical woodlands. As well as green and orange, the colours include lilac (above the orange band), yellow (below the orange) and grey (on the head and tail).

Although I chose a photo which wasn't too obviously a pigeon, I hope you were able to study it sufficiently closely to identify the family.
10. The title and introduction to the quiz referred to an advert run by the telecommunications company, Orange. In 2010 it joined with T-Mobile under which of these names?

Answer: EE

My recollection of the adverts is that it wasn't particularly clear what was being advertised, although that may just have been a lack of concentration. Orange and T-Mobile both still operate under their own names in the early part of the twenty-first century, with EE (standing for Everything Everywhere) being the parent company. EE is owned 50/50 by Deutsche Telekom (Germany) and Orange S.A. (France). The other companies listed are all in the telecom business in 2015 under the names listed.

If you studied the photo, you should have spotted that the camera is a Chinon 35 EE.
