Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who introduced chickens to America?

Answer: Columbus

Apparently chickens, with their ability to provide eggs every day as a ready made source of food that could be relied upon, arrived with Columbus on his second voyage to that nation in 1493. Eggs have been eaten by humanity since the year dot and because they contain protein and choline, they are classed as meat. But what happens to the poor little chicken once her life long devotion to feeding mankind begins to wane? She ends up in a pot somewhere, eaten by the very people she nurtured. I call that downright ungrateful, don't you? Eggsactly! Chickens of the world unite!

2. How many eggs on average does a chicken lay each year?

Answer: 280

A chicken can lay about 280 eggs each year, laying more eggs during the spring and summer season due to the longer days. They must be eggshausted after laying that many.

3. Many reptiles, fish and birds produce eggs that develop outside the bodies of the mothers. What term is applied to creatures that conform to this practice?

Answer: Oviparous

Oviparous creatures do not have the demands placed on them that are required during the development of the embryo. Once the eggs are laid, there is no more physiological investment from the mother, other than to guard and defend the nest and its eggs. Ovoviviparous creatures produce eggs that hatch within the mother's body. Oviform simply means shaped like an egg. Viviparous creatures give birth to living offspring that develop within the uterus of the mother.

4. I absolutely love going out for breakfast. Eggs of course are always on the menu. Generally this is the most common way people ask to have their eggs made in North America. Can you tell me which way that is?

Answer: Over easy

Over easy eggs are the most common form cooked in restaurants due to the fact that the egg whites are completely cooked yet the yolks are still runny so that you can dip your toast in them. It is now quite common in restaurants for people to ask for their scrambled eggs and omelettes done with egg whites only. Personally I just love the yolk!

5. The hollow shell of goose, duck or hens' eggs can be turned into a work of art by decorating. A hole is made at either end of the egg before the internal contents are removed. What is this process called?

Answer: Blowing

A needle is normally used to insert a hole at either end of an egg, with one hole being slightly larger than the other. The internal contents are then stirred with the needle, thus breaking the egg yolk inside. Blowing gently through the smaller hole will force the contents out through the larger hole. The egg shell is dried overnight and can then be decorated with dyes or paint.
Larger eggs, such as emu or ostrich, can also be used. The shells are that much stronger and can be carved or drilled with elaborate designs. The craft of egg decorating needs eggstreme caution otherwise the shell will break and your nerves will crack under the pressure.

6. There are few words used in the English language containing the letters "egg". Arpeggio is one of them, but what does it mean?

Answer: A chord whose notes are played in rapid succession

ARPEGGIO: These notes are played individually instead of simultaneously, usually moving from lowest to highest, and often used when practising the piano or vocal chords.

Some common jumps in ice-skating : Lutz, Axel, Salchow.
Some Latin Ballroom Dances : Tango, Polka, Merengue.
Some Medieval Musical Instruments : Psaltery, Crumhorn, Sackbut.

7. In Japan, which dainty bird's eggs are considered a delicacy?

Answer: Quail

The Japanese eat the quail egg either raw (what is it with the Japanese and raw food?) or they cook it up as tamago and use it in sushi (try saying that with your teeth out). It is also used in Bento lunches as well - a type of take away balanced meal packed into small containers. However, just to balance out the Japanese culture seeing the quail egg as a delicacy, on the other side of the world in Colombia and Venezuela, they plonk a single hard-boiled quail egg on top of their hot dogs (quite ignoring their yelps), and back in Vietnam, they sell bags filled with boiled quail eggs as snacks to eat with beer. Koreans also eat quail eggs in various forms - including part of cocktail weenies as Fun Trivia player Ubermom experienced while living in Korea for several years. I think I prefer the more appreciative form of the Japanese consumption, all in all. Beer and hot dogs - one quails at the thought.

8. An ostrich lays the largest egg, as we know! But which bird lays the smallest egg?

Answer: Hummingbird

The smallest bird egg is the bee hummingbird. You could put 4700 bee hummingbird eggs inside one ostrich egg. The bee hummingbird egg is the size of a small pea and weighs .02 ounces.

9. In Britain, eggs that are produced to a high standard are stamped with the image of which animal?

Answer: Lion

The British Lion mark on egg shells and egg boxes means that the eggs have been produced to the highest standards of food safety. The Lion Quality Code of Practice was launched in 1998 and includes compulsory vaccination against Salmonella Enteritidis of all pullets destined for Lion egg-producing flocks, independent auditing, full traceability of hens, eggs and feed and a "best-before" date stamped on the shell and pack, as well as on-farm stamping of eggs and packing station hygiene controls.

10. In which year was the first Easter Egg, a foodstuff that has become traditional at Easter, produced by Fry's?

Answer: 1873

Yes, it's 1873, although even before this date, normal eggs were usually eaten around Easter. Since 1873, the number of chocolate eggs manufactured each year has risen, and over £200 million is spent on chocolate eggs each year. The most popular chocolate egg is the Cadbury Creme Egg, which was introduced in 1971. J.S. Fry and Sons was a renowned British chocolate manufacturing firm which commenced business in 1759 and eventually merged with Cadbury in 1919.
