Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Vermont, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Indiana, California, and Texas all have an Orange County. But New York's is the original. What year was it established?

Answer: 1683

Rockland County, to the south, used to be part of Orange County until 1798 when it separated. Orange county was named for William III who was the king of England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1689 until 1702.
2. The motorcycle shop Orange County Choppers, featured on the show American Chopper, is located in New York?

Answer: True

Many people mistakenly believe it is located in Orange County, California, so Paul Teutul, Sr. got a tattoo saying "OCC New York" to clarify matters. They were located in Rock Tavern in the beginning, but have moved to Montgomery.
3. Orange County's Town of Monroe is the birthplace of what processed cheese?

Answer: Velveeta

It was first created in 1918 by Emil Frey, who was a Swiss immigrant. Interestingly, Philadelphia Cream Cheese was actually created in Chester, NY, which is near Monroe.
4. The tuxedo is named after Tuxedo Park, in Orange County?

Answer: True

Legend says that Mr. James Potter, who was a member of the Tuxedo Park Club, was invited to the UK by Prince Edward IIV. He inquired about the dress requirements for dinner, and was sent to Henry Poole and Co. in London. When he returned back to New York, his new dinner clothing was well liked, and many men copied him.
5. Which of these notable people have never called Orange County home?

Answer: Hillary Clinton, New York State Senator

Hillary Clinton lives in Chappaqua, Westchester County. Saul Williams is from Newburgh, Willie Smith is from Goshen, and Whoopi Goldberg has lived in Tuxedo Park. Geraldine Ferraro (member of Congress), James Patterson (author), Rob Bell (MLB pitcher) and Margaret Leech (winner of two Pulitzer Prizes) have all also lived in Orange County.
6. Where is the first mastodon skeleton that was ever completely assembled located?

Answer: SUNY Orange (Orange County Community College)

He was found in 1972. His name is Sugar, and he was named after Sugarloaf, the town which he was found near. Sugar has been radiocarbon dated and was found to be about 10,000 years old.
7. The oldest operating winery in America is in Washingtonville, Orange County. What is its name?

Answer: Brotherhood Winery

The winery was established before 1839 by a European immigrant, John Jaques. Brotherhood makes over 20 varieties of wine (the pinot noir is my favorite!) and distributes to places as far as Japan. The other wineries are all located in Orange County.
8. The Times-Herald Record is a newspaper that serves not only Orange County, but much of the western Hudson Valley. It also was a first in the country, but in what way?

Answer: It was the first cold press offset daily

Manny Fuchs, who was the chief photographer for The Record (as it's locally known) in the 1960's, has photographed many famous people such as Marilyn Monroe, Picasso, and Tennessee Williams. He was also a Holocaust survivor.
Hunter S. Thompson has also been employed by The Record, until he was fired for damaging a vending machine that had taken his money.
9. The Gomez Mill House is the country's oldest surviving residence of what religion?

Answer: Jewish

It was built in 1714 by Luis Moses Gomez, who had escaped from the Spanish Inquisition. Luis and his sons had a successful fur trade for 30 years, which they ran from the house. The property runs along the Hudson River and local Native Americans would come and hold ceremonial rites along the shores.
10. In the center of the City of Newburgh there is an old stone building that from April of 1782 until August of 1783 was occupied by General George Washington. It used to be called the Hasbrouck House. Its current name is what?

Answer: Washington's Headquarters

President Washington created the Badge of Military Merit (which later became the Purple Heart), and rejected suggestions that he should become king when the war ended at this site.
