Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What comic is recognizable by the black-and-white checkered hat and coat the character wore?

Answer: Pinky Lee

Pincus Leff was a "baggy pants" style comic in the 1940s and 1950s, hosting his own children's shows in the 1950s and 1960s. His catch phrase, whenever anyone irritated him, was "Oooooooo! You make me sooo MAD!" He passed away at age 85 in 1993.

Pink (Alecia Beth Moore) is a pop singer/songwriter and actress, nominee and winner of several Grammy awards.

Peewee Herman (Paul Reubens) styled some of his character and children's show (Peewee's Playhouse) on Pinky Lee.

Peggy Lee was an American jazz and pop singer/songwriter, and actress, nominee and winner of several Grammy awards. She was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995.
2. What highly talented actor was cast as Pinky Benson in the movie "What A Way To Go"?

Answer: Gene Kelly

Although all of these highly talented actors were cast in this black comedy, Gene Kelly performed musical numbers dressed as a clown in a bar. The 1964 film followed the tragic love life of Louisa May Foster, played by Shirley MacLaine, whose husbands all managed to die, through no fault of hers, leaving her insanely wealthy. Gene Kelly was one of the husbands.
3. In the musical "Grease", which character throws a milkshake into Kenickie's face, stating "To you from me, Pinky Lee!"

Answer: Rizzo

These are all Pink Ladies, recognizable by their pink jackets, and they are THE clique to which to aspire at the fictional Rydell High School. Rizzo and Kenickie were an item.
4. In the Roman Catholic Church, vestments are colored according to the ecclesiastical season. Two days of the year, the liturgical color is pink/rose. Which two days are they?

Answer: Gaudete Sunday and Laetare Sunday

Gaudete Sunday (third Sunday of Lent) and Laetare Sunday (fourth Sunday in Lent) are the only two days designated for pink vestments. Except for Palm Sunday, which is red vestments, all the rest of the listed days are white vestments.

Both Gaudete and Laetare are from the Latin, meaning "Rejoice".
5. Everybody with a garden has at least one object that catches your eye. What fanciful lawn ornament did Don Featherstone create in 1957?

Answer: Pink Flamingos

Don Featherstone was a classically trained artist when a friend asked him to help design a three dimensional ornament, instead of a flat ornament. So, in a way, he laid the groundwork for gnomes, fairies, geese and all manner of yard displays. Prior to creating the flamingo, he had been asked to design a duck, and he felt the best way to replicate it would be to buy one, and then released it after he completed his design. When asked to design the flamingo, he realized he couldn't buy one, so used National Geographic photographs. Rather successfully, I might add.

He passed away in June, 2015 at the age of 79. He lived to see his creations become a ubiquitous fixture worldwide, a symbol of kitsch and campiness.
6. A pink Chanel suit is a vivid image from a very sad day in US history. Why?

Answer: It was worn by Jackie Kennedy the day John Fitzgerald Kennedy, US president, was assassinated on November 22, 1963.

All these events were undeniably sad, but the only one in which a pink Chanel suit played a part was the assassination of JFK in Dallas, Texas. Iconic film show Jackie attempting to climb out of the convertible carrying the president, and Texas governor John Connally and his wife. A member of the Secret Service jumped on to the car to shield them. Jackie had cradled JFK's head, and his blood stained the suit. As the events of the day unfolded, Jackie continued wearing the suit, to the hospital, and on Air Force One leaving Dallas with the president's body. It was aboard Air Force One that Lyndon Baines Johnson was sworn in as president, and in another iconic photograph, Jackie is standing next to him at the swearing in, still in the blood stained pink Chanel suit.

Where is the suit now? It is in the hands of the National Archives and Records Administration in College Park, Maryland, stored in an unknown location, unfolded in an acid-free box, with instructions that it may not be displayed before the year 2103.
7. You've just been given a pink slip. Would it be appropriate to wear it on a formal occasion?

Answer: No

It would be difficult to say the least - there are actually several types of pink slips, none of which are wearable. Among them are notifications of dismissal from a job, certificate of ownership of a motor vehicle, and a cocktail.
8. If you are "in the pink", you are hale and hearty.

Answer: True

You've probably been seeing your doctor on a regular basis, plus eating apples in between!
9. Pink dolphins can be found in what country's river systems?

Answer: South America - the Amazon, the Orinoco, and Araguaia/Tocantins

Although there are freshwater species of dolphin in all of these systems, pink dolphins are endemic to the Amazon river system. They are born grey, as most dolphins, but as they age their skin becomes more translucent, and their blood system becomes more visible, thus giving them the pink coloring.
10. Pinkeye is an ailment of the eye, highly contagious. What is its medical designation?

Answer: Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis can be caused by several situations, including viral and bacterial infections, allergies, dry eyes or dust or smoke in the eyes. It can be transmitted to others literally by touch, such as sharing a towel or washcloth. Often the only symptom is the redness of the white of the eye, but it can include itchiness, or a white discharge. It usually goes away by itself within 7-10 days.

The other three ailments are also related to the eye-

Glaucoma is related to pressure on the optic nerve, and can cause loss of vision.

Cataracts are clouding of the lens of the eye, obscuring areas of vision to the point where severe cataracts can cover the entire eye.

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelash follicles. Causes can be allergic reactions, reaction to medications, or having dandruff which could catch on the eyelashes.
