Question 10 of 10
10. A total of 10 series of "Friends" were made, before the excessive financial demands of the cast meant that each episode cost as much to make as the Gross Domestic Product of many medium-sized nations, at which point it came to a welcome end. But which actress appeared alongside Dudley Moore in the 1979 film "10", directed by Blake Edwards? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the most irritating characters in "Friends" is named Chandler Bing. (What sort of a name is that?) Historically, what does a chandler manufacture?

Answer: Candles

Mass-produced candles these days are generally made of paraffin wax, but earlier materials included not just beeswax but also tallow, bayberries and whale fat (which is is obviously not exactly a popular option these days - except possibly in Japan).
2. At least Joey is a fairly sensible name, even if the same cannot be said of the character played by Matt Leblanc. However, a "Joey" is also the name given to the baby of which animal?

Answer: Kangaroo

Baby kangaroos have a pretty cushy start to life. Immediately after birth, the joey crawls up the mother's body and enters the pouch, where it lives the life of Riley for nine months, until presumably the mother (like all mothers everywhere) chucks it out. Or something like that.
3. There is also a character called Monica, played by Courteney Cox. But what sort of fruit is a Cox's Orange Pippin?

Answer: Apple

Named after Richard Cox (1777-1845) of Buckinghamshire, England, who produced it in the early 19th century as a cross between Ribston Pippin and Blenheim Orange. The original Cox's Orange Pippin tree appears to have blown down in a gale in 1911.
4. "Friends" is set in New York, a city in the United States of America. Which of the following is a popular nickname for New York?

Answer: The Big Apple

Sorry for all these questions about fruit, but it just seems to have worked out that way. No-one really knows how New York acquired this nickname; there are lots of different stories, although it seems to have originated in the 1920s, and may refer to a jazz club of that name.
5. Chandler is played by Matthew Perry. Perry is also a sort of drink: but what sort of fruit is it made from?

Answer: Pear

Oh no, sorry, sorry, sorry. It's fruit again. No more fruit questions, I promise. At least the answer isn't "apple" this time. Perry is similar to cider, but made out of pears (not apples). Drinking six pints of Perry is not something that I would normally recommend, although it might make watching an episode of "Friends" slightly more bearable.
6. David Schwimmer plays Ross. Schwimmer is the German for "swimmer", but I don't fancy a question about that. So instead, where is the Ross Ice Shelf located?

Answer: Antarctica

The biggest ice shelf in the world, apparently. As big as France. But I don't want to hear any comments about how nice it would be to put Ross on it and leave him there. Behave at the back there.
7. Lisa Kudrow plays Phoebe Buffay (no relation to the Vampire Slayer, apparently). But my question is, in which Shakespeare play does a shepherdess by the name of Phoebe appear?

Answer: As You Like It

And yes, I do know that "Death of a Salesman" and "The Crucible" are by Arthur Miller, not Shakespeare. I did say this was an easy quiz! Phoebe is loved by the shepherd, Silvius, but she falls in love with a chap named Ganymede, which is slightly embarrassing, since Ganymede is actually the heroine, Rosalind, in disguise. Cue for much cross-gender humour of a particularly Shakespearean kind.
8. And so back to Monica. The most famous Monica of the 20th century could well turn out to be Monica Lewinsky, who had an inappropriate relationship with which President of the United States of America?

Answer: Bill Clinton

The less said about this one the better. Any really interesting information wouldn't be suitable for a family quiz.
9. Oh dear, so late in the quiz, and we've not had a question about Jennifer Aniston (Rachel) yet. Jennifer Aniston is a sort of anagram of "One Tennis Fan" (but with I, J, and R left over). So which tennis player was literally stabbed in the back by a so-called fan in 1993?

Answer: Monica Seles

The man was a deranged and obsessive fan of Graf, whom Seles had beaten in the Australian Open earlier that year. Sadly, Seles (although she recovered) was never quite the same player again.

Answer: Bo Derek

Sadly, "Cuddly Dudley" died in 2002 at the age of 66, suffering from the degenerative brain condition Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. I really haven't got a clue what happened to Bo Derek.

So ends my quiz. Hope I didn't offend too many die-hard "Friends" fans! But I hope you found at least some of the interesting information to be interesting and informative.
