Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the 2013 Federal elections in Germany, one party that had so far always made it into parliament since 1949 failed to gather 5 percent of the votes and thus did not qualify. Which one?

Answer: FDP

Like the CDU (Christian Democrats) and SPD (Social Democrats), FDP (Liberal Democrats) have been in every Bundestag (the German equivalent of the US House of Representatives) from 1949 to 2013. However, in 2013, they only gained 4.8% of the vote and thus fell short of the required quorum for representation.
2. In the French soccer Ligue 1, one of the 20 teams represented for the 2013/14 season is not actually a team from France. Which non-French team plays in that league?

Answer: AS Monaco FC

AS Monaco FC, the strongest soccer club of the small principality of Monaco, does not play in Monaco itself (although Monaco does have an own football association) but rather associated itself with France and is thus playing in the French league system. AS Monaco has been a Ligue 1 champion 7 times, last in the year 2000.

They've also once played in the UEFA cup finals, in 2004. The club had a bad 2010/11 season, getting relegated to Ligue 2 after over 30 Ligue 1 years but were re-promoted in 2013.
3. Science knows a lot of cryptic shorthand - take for example "(Ne)3s1"? What does it describe?

Answer: The electron configuration of sodium

Each of the chemical elements has a specific configuration of its electrons across the up to 7 numbered shells. Each of these shells can have up to 4 different subshells, labeled with the letters s, p, d and f. In order to further shorten the descriptions of an electron configuration, the inner shells can be omitted by including the atomic symbol of the next lighter noble gas instead of its configuration. Thus, sodium has the configuration of neon (which is 1s2, 2s2p6) plus a single electron in the 3s subshell, so (Ne)3s1.
4. Where would you have to look for the longest mountain chain on Earth (by a factor of almost 10 over the second longest)?

Answer: In the oceans

Sometimes the craziest-looking answer is correct! The longest mountain chain in the world is not located on any continent, but rather the interconnected network of mid-ocean ridges spanning all around the globe. At a combined length of 65,000 kilometers (40,000 miles), it dwarfs the Andes, the longest continental mountain chain, by a factor of over 9.
5. "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that." This is a classic quote from a movie, but what is the "that" that the speaker of this quote cannot do?

Answer: Open the doors of a spacecraft

This quote is from Stanley Kubrick's "2001", created in parallel with the eponymous by novel Arthur C. Clarke. HAL-9001, the computer of a Jupiter exploration spacecraft, has taken over control of the ship and killed most of the crew with the last two surviving members outside the ship on an attempt to repair it. One of them is killed and the last survivor asks HAL to "Open the pod bay doors, HAL", upon which he receives the quote in the question as a reply. HAL knows that Dave and his partner Frank planned to deactivate it, and thus attempts to prevent this.
6. In Beethoven's opera "Fidelio", which of the following is the reasons why the titular character has entered the service of prison governor Don Pizarro?

Answer: Fidelio is a woman in disguise, looking for her husband

Fidelio's actual name is Leonore, the wife of Florestan, a noble who fell out of favor with Pizarro because he threatened to expose the latter's crimes and shady activities. Don Pizarro thus put Florestan into prison, attempting to eliminate him that way. Leonore, under the guise of being a young man looking for work, enters Pizarro's service and gains his trust, ultimately foiling Pizarro's plan to murder Florestan in the nick of time.
7. Without having any other information (such as the color of its parents), a nonpedigree cat with an entirely red coat color (possibly with white markings), is most likely of which gender?

Answer: Male

Beyond white, cats can have only two primary coat colors - black or red. All other colors are either caused by modifications of these colors or by markings. The red color is significantly rarer in the overall cat population than the black one (although, of course, some breeds have a very high red ratio or are even exclusively red). Whether a cat is red or black is determined by the X-chromosome, so a male (with one X) can be either black or red while a female (with two Xs), can be black, red or calico. Since the female needs two of the uncommon "red" Xs to be a pure red, the chance for a female to be pure red is far lower than a male's.
8. In the online video gaming world, the "free to play" genre of browser games, often multiplayer games, has spawned games that are technically free but inevitably will require the player to pay if they want to have any significant success in the game. What acronym is commonly used to describe this particular business model (regardless of game genre)?

Answer: P2W

"P2W" stands for "Pay to win" and describes games in which the basic play experience is free and a player can theoretically stay as a free player forever, but paying players have such significantly better access to in-game features that any significant progress in the game inevitably requires payment and there is almost no way that the free player will enjoy the game in the long run.

Not every game with a free and paid premium content is P2W however - many just give the paid player some extra areas to explore or some moderate benefits, but still allow dedicated free players to be fully competitive and enjoy themselves in the long run.

In most circles, "P2W" is used as a derogatory term, referring only to those games that don't offer reasonable long-term fun for free players.
9. The big Disney theme park resorts in Orlando (Walt Disney World) and Anaheim (Disneyland) have long resisted the trend towards thrill rides, in particular roller-coasters with inversions (loopings). In 1993, neither of them had such a coaster, but did this evolve over the 20 years thereafter?

Answer: Both resorts gained one such coaster

The Disney theme parks still favor family-friendly entertainment and rides over extreme thrill rides, thus coasters are rather tame compared to other major theme parks. Yet, both of the resorts gained an inverting coaster around the turn of the millennium: Disney Hollywood Studios in Orlando built the Rock'n'Rollercoaster (starring Aerosmith), featuring two roll-overs and a corkscrew, in 1999 while Disney's California Adventure opened in 2001 with the "California Screamin'" coaster, featuring a single straight looping. Neither of the resorts has gained further inverting coasters in the years thereafter, until at least 2013.
10. In "Star Trek: The Next Generation", the season 3/4 cliffhanger was called "Best of Both Worlds", a two-part episode centering on an encounter with the Borg. The episode right after it was in many ways a third part to this epic, looking at the aftermath of the encounter and how it has affected many of the characters. What was it called?

Answer: Family

After the encounter with the Borg had left the U.S.S. Enterprise severely damaged and Captain Picard struggling with the aftereffects of his temporary assimilation into the Borg Collective, the ship returned to Earth for repairs and a much needed shore leave. Several of the plot threads of this episode strongly tie into the previous "Best of Both Worlds" arc, most notably Picard's dispute with his brother over the future of Picard's nephew René who plans to enter Starfleet, against the express wishes of his father.
