Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Biting your nails is a common sign of stress. There are even people who find it soothing to bite their toenails. Ugh! But you really should not do it. It could give you a hernia and also:

Answer: All of these.

You do not want to know how many living organisms find their habitat around your toenails. If you maintain your toenails by clipping them straight there will be less risk of an in-growing nail. Well groomed nails and clean feet look better for the people around you. Believe me, it's true.
2. True or false: toenails keep growing after your death.

Answer: False

It just looks that way because your skin is retracting which makes your nails protrude more. Believe you me, in the arms of the Grim Reaper nothing grows at all.
3. Say you are a professional torturer. Which method of torture would you prefer to get the best results (which includes leaving no tracable evidence)?

Answer: Inserting a sharp and sterile needle underneath the toenail.

If executed properly the insertion of a sharp and sterile needle will leave no mark but will still cause excruciating pain. Pulling the nail or crushing it will certainly hurt like there is no tomorrow but it will also leave marks and that is not a good thing if you are a professional torturer. Filing the toenail until the flesh is just a good way to maintain healthy toenails and doesn't hurt a bit.

And uhhh... do I need to add that torture is illegal and should not be executed ever?
4. Which of the listed home remedy solutions can actually, scientifically proven, cure toenail fungus also known as Onychomycosis?

Answer: None of these.

It is a big mistake to try to cure nail fungus with home remedies. I have found things like vinegar, bleach, rubbing alcohol, Vicks vapor rub and even Listerine as a possible solution. Just go see the doctor and get a real fungus killer. Nothing to be ashamed about, millions have done it before you.

Can you imagine the look on the face of the doctor when he smells your feet if you have actually tried all these home remedies? Phew!
5. Fingernails are pretty breakable, especially if they spend a lot of time doing the dishes. Toenails however need a formidable weed whacker or petrol powered grinding tool to get them trimmed. How is that possible since they are made of the same material?

Answer: Toenails experience more friction from sock and shoe and are stimulated more to grow thick.

This goes basically also for the soles of the feet versus the palm of the hand according some doctor from the Medical College of Wisconsin. A tip from grandma: If you want your toenails to be softer when cutting them, soak them for about 10 minutes in warm, mildly salty water.
6. You can recognize some diseases by the color of your nails. Examples are; White means liver disease, red a heart condition, pale indicates anemia. But what can you say about a black nail? (think: auch)

Answer: Clumsiness and uttered curses.

With a kidney disease, the nail might show half pink half white. How pretty is that. Diabetes shows a yellowish nail with a bluish at the base, a lung disease is indicated with a yellow thick nail growing slowly.

Your nail becomes black however when you hit it with a hammer. This indicates a concerning level of clumsiness and this is often accompanied by assorted curses and profanities.
7. Toenails, like hair, grow continuously. The average growth rate for nails is 0.1 mm each day. Is it true that the nails of men grow faster than the nails of women?

Answer: Yes

It is true with a possible exception during pregnancy. Hormones can make nails grow faster but on average men's nails do grow faster. Grow rate can also be influenced by other things like age, season (faster in the summer) or activity level (a nail on the dominant hand grows faster). Your diet and general health play a part too. Fingernails also grow faster than toenails.
8. Since we are on the subject of toenails: What is the matrix?

Answer: The area under the cuticle, which is the rim of the nail.

It is where growth of the nail is taking place.
9. The platypus is a unique Australian creature. It is, together with the other two species of echidna, the only egg-laying mammal, and it lives most of his life in the water. Interesting huh?! But does the platypus have toenails?

Answer: Yes

Well, you could argue that the platypus does not have toes as such, but flippers. Their feet have broad (toe/flipper) nails for digging.
10. The toenail is not just a human attribute. Diablo himself is also equipped with this feature. Which of the below mentioned "Devil's Toenail" referrals is different from the other ones? (Hint: Fossil or not?)

Answer: The Devil's Toenail close to Click in Llano County, Texas, USA.

All the toenails refer to actual fossils except the Texas one.

The oyster (Gryphaeaarcuata) fossil is commonly known as "Devil's Toenail" because it resembles one (as if anyone has ever seen Beelzebub in person).

In the fantasy book by Sally Prue a 13 year old boy receives magical powers after he found a Devil's Toenail fossil rock on the beach.

The attraction in Cornwall is a rather pitiful display of a melon sized fossil rock which, again, resembles the toenail of Mephistopheles, our friend Lucifer from below. It seems you even have to pay entrance fee to see it. Hint: Don't.

The "nail" in Texas is the name of an elevation which stands 116 meters above Sandy Creek. On the west side of this sandstone hill you can see a 60 meter escarpment which looks like a toenail belonging to The Dark One but is not a fossil. Therefore, the Texas mountain is the odd one out.
