Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of what family does the dolphin belong?

Answer: Delphinidae

The dolphin is part of the Delphinidae family of the suborder odontoceti of the order cetacea (you probably notice the order from one of my previous quizzes). And yes, the 'killer whale' is part of the Delphinidae family, making it a dolphin.
2. What plant would you be talking about if you referred to the Latin name 'Cornus nuttallii'?

Answer: Pacific dogwood

The dogwood is the province of British Columbia's floral emblem.

Answer: Gorilla gorilla

It comes from Greek 'gorillai' and was adopted as a specific name in 1847.
6. Of what colour does zinc tend to be?

Answer: Bluish-white

Zinc's chemical symbol is Zn. Zinc's atomic number is 30, which means that each zinc atom contains 30 protons.

Answer: Vancouver, BC (Canada) to Los Angeles, CA

8. What species bears the scientific name 'Gulo Gulo'?

Answer: Mysticeti and Odontoceti

Mysticeti are whales without teeth; Odontoceti (note the prefix 'odonto-') have teeth. Delphinidae, or dolphins (see question 1), are classed under Odontoceti.
11. The British Columbian provincial election of 2001 yielded how many seats for the Liberal government?

Answer: 77

BC politics are never boring; the New Democratic Party (NDP) who had not been the greatest government (to say the least) the last 8 years gave in (everyone knew the Liberals were going to win) and rallied under an 'Elect a strong opposition' platform. BC voters elected a total of two NDP members to government: Joy McPhail and Jenny Kwan.
12. Name a country that has a name that starts with A but does not end with A?

Answer: Afghanistan

13. How many gifts were given in 'The Twelve Days of Christmas'?

Answer: 364

Remember that on the first day, there was a partridge in a pear tree, then on the second day, two turtle doves and another partridge in a pear tree! Therefore, you say 1 plus (1 plus 2) plus (1 plus 2 plus 3) etc. The total is 364.
14. What Madonna song was used in 2001 ads for Microsoft Windows XP?

Answer: 'Ray of Light'
