Mount Rushmore is named after a New York lawyer named Charles E. Rushmore who visited the Black Hills in 1885. He asked a local prospector what the name of the 6,000 foot peak was, and since it had no name the prospector jokingly said "Mount Rushmore". It has never been changed since.
