Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The truth is like a lion; you don't have to defend it. Let it loose; it will defend itself." This quote has often been attributed (probably erroneously) to which person, who also has an animal in his name?

Answer: Augustine of Hippo

While there are multiple memes and quotation websites that attribute this quote to Augustine of Hippo (also known as St. Augustine), no one can seem to find it in any of his multiple writings. Instead, the quote appears to be a paraphrase of one by an English Particular Baptist preacher named Charles Spurgeon: "The Word of God is like a lion. You don't have to defend a lion. All you have to do is let the lion loose, and the lion will defend itself."
2. Which real-life emperor of Ethiopia is revered by followers of the Rastafari religion and known as the Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah?

Answer: Haile Selassie I

Haile Selassie I, who died in 1975, was crowned emperor of Ethiopia in 1930. He lived in exile in England during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia (1936-1941) and then resumed his rule till 1974, when he was overthrown in a coup. Selassie claimed descent from the ancient Israelite king Solomon and Makeda, the queen of Sheba.

His birth name, Tafari, means "one who is respected or feared", and his baptismal name, Haile Selassie, means "power of the Trinity". Selassie was revered by many, especially the Rastas, many of whom still see him as the Second Coming of Jesus of Nazareth.
3. "Born Free" (1966) is a British film based on the real-life experience of a couple, Joy and George Adamson, who raised an orphaned lioness cub and later returned her to the wild in Kenya. What was the name of this lioness?

Answer: Elsa

The movie was based on Joy Adamson's 1960 book "Born Free", and it was a British box-office hit, also receiving rave reviews from critics. The Adamsons were able to visit Elsa and her three cubs after her release, and she remembered them. Sadly, Elsa passed away at only about four years of age, succumbing to a malaria-like tick-borne virus.
4. The movie "Lion" (2016) tells the true story of Saroo Brierley, a young Indian boy who is separated from his parents when he ends up on a train that carries him nearly a thousand miles from his home. He is eventually adopted by an Australian couple but is inspired to return to India in search of his past. Where did the movie's title come from?

Answer: Saroo's birth name, Sheru, which means "lion" in Hindi

The film "Lion" was based on Brierley's autobiographical book "A Long Way Home". Brierley was born Sheru Munshi Khan, and he did not realize till many years later that he had been mispronouncing his own name. His story is remarkable, and so is the movie, which I highly recommend.
5. The song "Lion", released in 2016 by the duo Truth, belongs to which musical genre?

Answer: Dubstep

Originating in 2006 in Christchurch, New Zealand, Truth consists of Tristan Roake and Andre Fernandez.
6. What is the Nittany lion, the mascot of the Pennsylvania State University?

Answer: The Eastern cougar, thought to have once lived on local Mt. Nittany

In 1904, Penn State senior H.D. "Joe" Mason traveled to Princeton University and was promptly chagrined by his school's lack of a mascot. Therefore, he immediately came up with the "Nittany lion" to take on that role. Sadly, the Eastern cougar was declared extinct in 2015.
7. The play "The Lion in Winter" (1966) by James Goldman contains all of the following historical characters EXCEPT which one?

Answer: Edward I (Longshanks)

This play (which inspired a 1968 movie of the same name starring Peter O'Toole, Katharine Hepburn, and Anthony Hopkins) is a work of historical fiction. It concerns the machinations of various royal family members in the year of 1183. Longshanks, born in 1239, was not around at that time.
8. Which of the following movies is a documentary featuring actual lions?

Answer: "The Last Lions" (2011)

"The Last Lions" was filmed in Botswana by the National Geographic Society and narrated by Jeremy Irons (who, incidentally, voiced the villainous Scar in Disney's animated film "The Lion King"). The remaining choices include a historical action film ("Lion of the Desert"), a coming-of-age story ("Secondhand Lions"), and a darkly comedic satire ("Four Lions").
9. Which of the following is a truth about African lions?

Answer: The females do almost all of the hunting.

The lion is the second-largest species of cat, the tiger being the largest. Lions used to exist throughout Asia and Europe in addition to Africa; now they exist as two subspecies, one in Africa and a smaller one in Asia. Although it has mistakenly been called "king of the jungle", the lion prefers open grassland habitat.

The females do the bulk of the hunting while the males stay home to protect their groups, known as prides.
10. Which of the following is truly NOT like the others, keeping in mind the theme of this quiz?

Answer: Catapult

A catapult is a weapon commonly used in medieval times to launch missiles. The other choices are all synonymous with the mountain lion, also known as the cougar, a large cat native to the Americas.
