Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Numbers Theory, twenty is known as a tetrahedral number because it is the sum of the first four triangular numbers- which are 1, 3, 6, 10. What triangular number follows immediately?

Answer: 15

Let's suppose you had 2 dozen apples and you set one on a table. Then, you decided to lay down successive rows always to form a triangle with your apples. The first count would be 1. After row two, the count would be 3, after row three, the count would be 6 and so on. You'd have to add 4 next and get 10.

The next row would be 5, making 15 apples on the table (our answer). Finally, you would lay down 6 apples to total a neatly formed triangle of 21, leaving you with three to eat while you admire your advanced math skill or your obsessive compulsive disorder, or both!
2. How many farthings would you need to make a pound before British money was decimalized?

Answer: 960

Prior to 1971, the British monetary system was based on 20, due to the number of fingers and toes on the average consumer. A pound was made up of 20 shillings; a shilling was made up of 12 pence, and each penny was (until 1960) divided into quarter values - or "farthings". Early pennies were actually scored in quarters so as to be broken.
3. My old 'Dungeons and Dragons' game has a die that's an icosahedron. What is the chance of my "coming out seven" rolling just that one die?

Answer: 5%

If you're playing Craps with a single 20-sided die, I want to play at your table! Since there are 20 possible throws with the one die, the likelihood of any number is never more or less than 5% - not good odds against the house. Consider that in real Craps, the chances of "coming out 7" shooting two six-sided dice are 16.67%. Use your icosahedron for role play, but not for roll play!
4. If you go to the pharmacist and ask him with "a little something with an atomic number of 20" for your tummy, what are you looking to procure?

Answer: calcium

You are seeking some antacid containing calcium to sooth your upset stomach. While all, in fact, are alkaline earth metals, not all will help you get back to sleep. Barium is used in nuclear medicine to detect malfunctioning bowels. Magnesium is a laxative and will likely keep your bowels working late into the night. Strontium would then be handy to make some flares in the event the paper ran out.
5. Your eye doctor congratulates you on having 20/20 vision. What is he actually suggesting?

Answer: You can see detail at a distance of 20 feet that someone with normal eyesight can see.

To have 20/20 vision means that you can see detail at 20 feet what an ordinary person can see at the same distance. To have 20/200 vision is to see at 20 feet what a normally sighted person can see at 200'. This is considered the threshold for legal blindness. Alternately, you can just memorize the letters DEFPOTEC, which is the 20/20 line on the Snellen Eye Chart used to renew your driver's license at the motor vehicle bureau.
6. The 20th verse of the 20th chapter of the 20th Book of the Bible reads "The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty wide and twenty high."

Answer: False

That verse is actually found in 1 Kings 6:20. The 20th book of the Bible is Proverbs. "If a man curses his father or mother, his lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness." - Proverbs 20:20 (NIV)
7. What American stock Car driver drove car number 20 to victory twice (2002, 2005) in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series?

Answer: Tony Stewart

Gordon won four times in the #24 car (1995, 1997, 1998, 2001). # 48 Johnson won twice (2006, 2007) and Busch won once - in 2004 in the #2 car.
8. The Roman numeral for 20 (XX) originated as a representation of four hands indicating numerical quantities.

Answer: True

The Etruscans used 1 digit up to a whole hand for 5 (later represented by 'V'). Two hands together made ten (or 'X').
9. What U.S. President appeared on the first federally issued $20 dollar bill?

Answer: Grover Cleveland

All of the men appeared at one time on a $20 bill. Cleveland was the first to be honored by the Federal Reserve in 1914. Andrew Jackson, ironically, replaced him in 1928. As President, Jackson was opposed to paper money. Hamilton appeared on an 1869 note, but he was never elected President. Garfield was on a $20 that was issued in the aftermath of his 1881 assassination, but it was not a Federal Reserve bill.
10. If, after all these years, your CB (Citizen's Band) radio crackled to life and someone asked you for a "10-20", what would they be seeking?

Answer: your location

This radio "Ten Code" was shortened to "20", or in CB slang, "your location". You could have a "Home 20" or a "Work 20". If you're 10-6, you might need to 10-12 until you can get a better 10-2, but if you just need a 10-36, you'd best 10-7. This quiz is 10-96!
