Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. More than 10% of the earth's surface is classified as a jungle environment.

Answer: False

A jungle is a thick, dense forest found in hot, humid climates. Over half of the world's known and unknown animal species' inhabit the jungle.

However, not even 6% of the earth's surface is jungle. Most jungles can be found in Africa, Asia, South and Central America (where the climate is usually the hottest)
2. The word jungle is derived from the Sanskrit word "jangala." "Jangala" translates to what word?

Answer: wilderness

Sanskrit was one of the world's first known languages. "Jangala" was a term used to refer to any form of unattended or untouched landscape (such as a desert)
3. A tiger is often depicted as "king of the jungle."

Answer: False

Lions are often depicted as the "king of the jungle." The reason for this is because they are often depicted as the most powerful and dominant animal of the jungle; however, in reality lions very seldom live in jungles but are grassland animals.

Tigers do often live in the jungle but that's not how the saying goes.
4. The first jungle gym was invented and patented by Sebastian Hinton in what U.S. city?

Answer: Chicago

Hinton built the jungle gym to allow people to have a "hands-on understanding" of what 3-dimensional space was. Today, it is seen as a common piece of playground equipment. Many parks and playgrounds around the world have jungle gyms in which children (and sometimes adults) can hang from, climb, and sit on.

In the past years however, many children have been harmed while playing on jungle gyms as a result of falling off or hitting their heads on the jungle gym. Many playgrounds now have some sort of material covering the ground to help reduce the chances of injuries (The most common type of impact-absorbing material used is wood chips)
5. Which of these actresses have a role in the NBC show "Lipstick Jungle?"

Answer: Brooke Shields

"Lipstick Jungle" is an NBC show centering around three women who try to balance their personal lives with jobs in the fashion world.

6. Which of the following expressions has the same meaning as "The Law of the Jungle?"

Answer: Survival of the fittest

"The law of the jungle" states that everyone fends for themselves, and only the strong will survive. Because of all the obstacles and dangers lurking in the jungle, only those who are strong and wise will live.

The law of the jungle is stated much differently in Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book," as a pack of wolves discuss that the pack must stick together to survive, and those who don't will die indefinitely.
7. How do you say "jungle" in Spanish?

Answer: selva

"Selva" is the Spanish word for jungle. "Playa" is the Spanish word for beach. "El mar" is the Spanish word for sea. "Desierto" is the Spanish word for desert.
8. Who played Flipper Purify in the 1991 movie "Jungle Fever?"

Answer: Wesley Snipes

The movie "Jungle Fever" centers around an African-American architect named Flipper Purify (Wesley Snipes) who falls in love with an Italian-American woman named Angie Tucci (Annabella Sciorra). As their relationship grows, they receive rude and unwanted pressure and commentary from their friends and family. At the same time in the movie, Flipper's brother Gator (Samuel L. Jackson) struggles with a drug addiction that gets out of hand as it takes over his life.

This movie debuted in theaters on June 7, 1991.
9. Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book" was the inspiration for Walt Disney's animated film "The Jungle Book." What is the name of the tiger who tries to kill Mowgli before he can return safely to the man-village?

Answer: Shere Khan

In this movie, Bagheera (a black panther) and a family of wolves who have been raising Mowgli discuss that he needs to return to the man village in the Indian jungle before Shere Khan can find him and kill him. King Louie, a monkey, kidnaps Mowgli and tries to make him make fire. (Mowgli escapes though) Kaa, a python, attempts to eat Mowgli by hypnotizing him first, and then eating him (though Mowgli escapes both times) When Shere Khan finds Mowgli, several animals distract Shere Khan long enough for Mowgli to attach a burning tree branch to his tail to scare him off.

(This was the last movie Walt Disney helped produce before he died)
10. What classic rock band is famous for their single "Welcome to the Jungle" on their album "Appetite for Destruction?"
