Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Couch Hot Baked

Answer: Potato

On a potato, the eyes sprout to form new tubers. It is necessary to have at least two eyes on each seed potato; they only sprout and grow after breaking from a dormant state. Many times people will find that their cupboards provide a favorite environment in which potatoes like to sprout! Please remember that it is not especially healthy to eat these sprouts. While many would have to be ingested in order to make a person ill, they do carry certain toxins. In addition, usually as the potato sprouts, it becomes soft and does not have most of its nutrients intact.

A "couch potato" is a person who watches a lot of television and spends little or no time exercising. A "Hot potato" can be a situation that no one wants to deal with, or a party game that involves tossing an object around a circle. When the music stops, the person holding the "hot potato" is out. Of course, baked is a way to prepare a potato for eating.
2. Thread Camel Annoy

Answer: Needle

The eye, or oval, of the needle is the loop that is used for pulling thread. "Passing through the eye of a needle", is a phrase used to describe a very difficult situation and is used in many religious works. For example, in the Jewish Talmud, it is used to explain that dreams can reveal what is really in a person's heart: "They do not show a man a palm tree of gold, nor an elephant going through the eye of a needle". Jesus Christ, in trying to convince the rich to share with the poor, is frequently quoted as saying, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God". The Islam religion also uses the term in reference to those who would not convert: "To those who reject Our signs and treat them with arrogance, no opening will there be of the gates of heaven, nor will they enter the garden, until the camel can pass through the eye of the needle: Such is Our reward for those in sin".

When used as a noun, a thread goes through the eye of a needle, however, when used as a verb, the word "needle" means to annoy or bother. A phrase which is used to describe a difficult task is "a camel passing through the eye of a needle".
3. Depression Iowa State Mercury

Answer: Cyclone

The eye of a cyclone is typically an area of calm weather, usually 20-40 miles in diameter, which is the geometric center of the storm. Some eyes can be much larger, as with the case of Typhoon Carmen, which had an eye that was approximately 200 miles across. It is, however, surrounded by an area that is called the eyewall, where most of the severe thunderstorms and strongest winds are located. Cyclone and typhoons are basically the same type of storm, but take place in different areas. While a typhoon is found in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, a cyclone occurs in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.

A cyclone may also be called a "depression", depending on its location and strength. The "Cyclones" of Iowa State University are the college's athletic teams; it was, however, very difficult to represent a mascot with a cyclone, so the team's official mascot is Cy, the Cardinal. Mercury produced a car called the "Cyclone" from 1964-71. It began as an option for the Mercury Comet, and eventually became part of the Montego line.
4. Helmet Disposable Instant

Answer: Camera

The "Merriam-Webster" dictionary defines the term "camera eye" as "the capacity for reporting that is as detailed and detached as a photograph"; in other words, reporting in an impartial way. On the other hand, "Oxford Dictionaries" says it is "the ability to record or recall detailed impressions of what one sees with photographic accuracy", as with an eidetic memory.

Types of cameras, the "helmet", "disposable", and "instant" are used in different ways. Also called a "lipstick camera", the helmet camera records action and allows the user free use of his hands and eyes. A "disposable" camera is a simple box camera that is manufactured for one-time use, and an "instant" camera uses self-developing film so that a print is made shortly after taking the picture.
5. Cog Comb Saw

Answer: Tooth

Also called the canine teeth, the eyeteeth are the long, pointed teeth found in mammals that are generally located under the eye. Often the largest teeth in a mammal's mouth, there are two maxillary canines and two mandibular canines. The term "to give one's eyeteeth" is also used to denote something of great value, while "to cut one's eyeteeth" means to gain experience.

The term "tooth" is used to describe projections on tools or other instruments, such as a cog on a gearwheel or the points on a comb or saw.
6. Gum String Over

Answer: Shoes

On some shoes, the laces pass through a series of holes called eyes or eyelets; others employ the use of hooks or loops. The oldest known shoe with eyes and laces dates to approximately 3500 BC, and was discovered in the modern day country of Armenia. Shoes belonging to Ötzi, who is also called the Iceman, also had eyes, and dated to approximately 3300 BC.

The term "gumshoe" is used to describe a detective, while "shoestring" is a term that can be used to describe an inadequate budget or a shoelace. An "overshoe", another word for galoshes, protects normal shoes in bad weather.
7. Pipe Up Hot

Answer: Stove

While many people called the eyes on the stove "burners", apparently in the southern USA, people do called the burners "eyes". If the stove is electric, the term refers to the cooking element. On a gas stove, it is called a "gas eye". On one site, a set of directions entitled, "How to Clean Stove Eyes on a (Brand Name) Stove", was found, so it must be legit!

A "pipestove" is a type of a hat, also called a top hat, like the one frequently worn by US President Lincoln. To be "stove up" means to be extremely tired, injured, or ill, and the "hot stove league", a term that is used in baseball for the off season, is frequently used to describe the player transactions that take place during that time.
8. Poker Philippines Cake

Answer: Pineapple

The pineapple fruit, which is a compound fruit called a syncarp, is actually around 100 ovaries fused together; each eye of the pineapple is located on one ovary. Many clever gadgets are sold that make peeling a pineapple easier these days. Using one of these will probably make it difficult to see the eyes, as they are cut from the fruit along with the peeling and core. Peeling with a knife, however, just as close to the pineapple fruit as possible (some say the best-tasting part of the fruit is at the very edge) will reveal brown dots, called eyes, that are arranged in diagonal lines around the fruit. The eyes are not edible, and must be removed before eating.

In Poker, the game "Pineapple" is a variation of "Hold'em", where players receive three cards each and have to discard one of them after the flop is dealt. While some may associate the growing of pineapples with Hawaii, a 2012 "Top 5 of Anything" says that the Philippines produces the most in the world. Of course, pineapple is a key ingredient in a delicious upside down cake!
9. Drink Computer Cranberries

Answer: Zombie

Okay! This may be a touchy subject to some zombie fans, as different websites have varying opinions on whether or not a zombie can see. The general consensus found, however, is that they see for a very short time (month or less) before they become blind for the remainder of their existence, which could be as long as four years according to "Zombie Crisis", and "years, if not decades" according to "The Walking Dead Wiki". Their eyes immediately begin to deteriorate as their eyes dry out and decay, but they are still over 80% combat effect without sight, relying more on their senses of smell and hearing.

A zombie is a mixed drink that is made with rum, liqueur, and fruit juice. In computer science, it is also a computer that is connected to the live internet that has been compromised in some way - by a hacker, virus, or trojan horse. A protest song written by the Cranberries, "Zombie" won the "Best Song" award in 1995 at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
10. Alley Dorothy Twister

Answer: Tornado

Two types of tornadoes, single-vortex and multiple-vortex, cause storms which are believed to produce the fastest winds on earth. These destructive storms are believed to have calm centers, which some meteorologists call "eyes". Apparently there are two accounts, dating to 1928 and 1943, about people who have been in the eye of the tornado and have lived to tell about it. Both stories are similar, describing the eye as a wall of clouds, from which smaller tornadoes would form and break free, with constant bursts of lightning. In both cases, very little damage was done to the home of the observer, while the tornado went on to cause death and destruction to others nearby.

An region of the United States, "Tornado Alley" is an area where tornadoes, also called twisters, are frequently sighted. A tornado took Dorothy Gale of Kansas to the land of Oz in the 1939 movie, "The Wizard of Oz".
