Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Joseph Heller's "Catch 22" was loosely based on what Italian battle during World War II?

Answer: Monte Cassino

Monte Casino was a monastery on top of a mountain. The Germans were slowing down the Allies in their approach to Rome. The monastery was bombed into rubble, but this made it easier for the Germans to defend. The Battle of Monte Cassino was the bloodiest in the Italian theater.
2. When Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon, he claimed, "The ______ is cast."

Answer: Die

To cross the Rubicon with an army was prohibited by law. This action was to declare war on Rome. The Senate sent Pompey to battle Caesar, but Caesar won and the rest is history.

In this context the word 'die' does not refer to dice - the object or the game. A die is a mold used to create an object such as a statue. After a die is cast (that is, filled with the substance the object will be made of) it is broken in order to release the newly cast object. What Caesar was saying here was that the deed had been done and the old ways were no longer valid because things had changed.
3. What is the name of the Earth's natural satellite?

Answer: Moon

The same side of the moon always faces the earth. The Soviets were the first to see the back side of the moon when Luna 3 took 29 photos.
4. Which of these gems is made from pure carbon?

Answer: Diamond

Diamond is also the hardest mineral. The tradition of diamonds for engagement rings is not as old as you think. It actually started in the 1930s with a DeBeers ad campaign.
5. What country did the Romanov dynasty once control?

Answer: Russia

With the breakup of the Soviet Union, the Romanovs are trying to be restored to the throne as a constitutional monarch, but the Russian people refuse to let them take the throne.
6. What degree gets to wear three velvet bars on each sleeve of their graduation robe?

Answer: Doctor

A doctor also gets bell shaped sleeves and their hoods have panels. The colors inside their hood represents the school they went to and the color of the collar represents the discipline they studied.
7. What element is has the chemical symbol "Au"?

Answer: Gold

Au is from the Latin "Aurum". Gold is highly ductile, malleable, a great conductor, and is almost non-reactive. That why it has been so prized throughout history.
8. A Billy Idol song has a background singer saying "Les yeux sans visage". The song is "_______ without a face".

Answer: Eyes

The title of the song is based on a 1959 French horror film where a doctor experiments with skin grafting in order to rebuild his daughter's face.
9. Thor was the Norse god of what?

Answer: Thunder

His hammer created thunder and lightning. His belt doubled his strength. His iron gloves let him throw his hammer. He was probably the most loved of the Norse gods.
10. When Julius Rosenberg was executed, at the time it was not clear whether he had committed any crime, but later evidence has shown that he was in fact guilty. What was he?

Answer: A Spy

He was executed with his wife Ethel. Their execution was controversial at the time, but an examination of Soviet secret documents from the time show that they were Soviet spies.
11. The Queen of Great Britain is addressed by this title: Your ________.

Answer: Majesty

Highness is used for princes and princesses and Holiness is used for the Pope.
12. At the end of the 20th century how many times had a US president been impeached?

Answer: Twice

Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were both impeached but not convicted. Richard Nixon was never impeached, but he probably would have had he not resigned.
13. A carbine is a type of what?

Answer: Gun

A carbine is a light automatic rifle.
14. This mollusk is named "eight-leg".

Answer: Octopus

An urban legend around since the 1930s is about a girl that swallows an octopus egg. The egg develops and everyone thinks she's pregnant. Eventually it is assumed to be a tumor, so when it is removed, everyone is shocked to find a fully formed octopus alive.
15. So what fictional character is the common bond?

Answer: James Bond

The James Bond books in order are: 'CASINO Royale', 'Live and Let DIE', 'MOONraker', 'DIAMONDs are Forever', 'From RUSSIA With Love', 'DOCTOR No', 'GOLDfinger', 'For Your EYES Only', 'THUNDERball', 'The SPY Who Loved Me', 'On Her MAJESTY's Secret Service', 'You Only Live TWICE', 'The Man With the Golden GUN', and 'OCTOPUSsy'.

By the way: the correct answer is "oh-oh-seven" not "zero-zero-seven". The codenames for all of the secret service personnel start out with letters - not numbers.
