Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2011, magician Paul Daniels was hospitalised after a pizza was forcefully thrown at his face. Who was the unlikely perpetrator?

Answer: Sooty the puppet

Daniels was appearing on a special edition of the Sooty Show, which in one sketch involved the loveable hand puppet throwing a pizza at the (then) 73-year old magician. Daniels, always the showman, claimed that the throw in the first take was not forceful enough and asked for it to be re-done.

As Sooty limbered up and summoned all his strength for the hurl, he ended up hospitalising Daniels, who thankfully made a full recovery.
2. In Norse mythology, King Fjolnir met his untimely demise by drowning in a vat of a favourite drink of the ancients. Which drink was this?

Answer: Mead

King Fjolnir was believed to be the son of Frey, one of the major gods in Norse mythology. Fjolnir's mother was Gerd, a giantess who was admired by Frey from afar. Gerd initially refused the advances of Frey's servant Skirnir on behalf of the god, but eventually succumbed after several threats were made against her. And who said romance was dead?
3. Rumours of the Greek philosopher Chrysippus's death may be greatly exaggerated, but how does one often-told story say that he died?

Answer: He died of laughter after seeing his drunken donkey eating figs

Chrysippus was a 3 BC Greek philosopher who was one-time head of the school of stoics. One well-known story says that he died of laughter after feeding his drunken donkey several figs. The details of the story seem to have been muddled with time - whether the wine or the figs came first, and whether or not it was his donkey.

Moreover, the person whom this anecdote stems from (Diogenes Laertius) actually gives another account of Chrysippus's death, saying that he simply died from drinking too much wine himself.
4. Francis Bacon, father or the scientific method and all-round rational chap, died in 1626 of pneumonia. How did he contract pneumonia?

Answer: By stuffing a fowl with snow

Perhaps I'm misrepresenting Bacon in this question. He wasn't madly stuffing a fowl because he'd lost his marbles. He was actually performing an experiment to test how the cold was capable of preserving meat. Bacon's promotion of the acquisition of knowledge through sensory experience - known as empiricism - was an important stepping stone away from the basing of knowledge on blind faith.
5. The American industrialist Eben Byers was a huge fan of drinking medicinal water that he believed to be keeping him in good health. As the Wall Street Journal rather glibly reported, the "Water Worked Fine Until His Jaw Came Off". What was the problem with this water?

Answer: It contained large amount of radioactivity

This medicinal water contained radium, was marketed as "Radithor", and is characteristic of both the quackery of the times and the vogue of putting radium into just about everything. Byers was said to have consumed around 1,400 bottles of the water, which led to necrosis of his mandible. Most of the food and drink we consume contains trace amounts of radioactivity, but it was the sheer amount that Byers consumed that was problematic. Brazil nuts can be eaten safely, but contain around 200 Bq of radium per kilogram.

In comparison, one bottle of Radithor contained (at least) 37 kBq of the stuff. That's 185 times more than a kilogram of Brazil nuts!
6. In one episode of "The Simpsons", Homer is pelted with cans of Campbell's soup by a famous artist, who taunts Homer, shouting "soup's on, fat boy". Which artist was this?

Answer: Andy Warhol

After failing to assemble a barbeque in "Mom and Pop Art", Homer's poor attempt is seen as modern art. Through his guilt, Homer has a nightmare about being tormented by famous art works. This includes being pelted with Campbell's soup cans by Andy Warhol, in reference to his "Campbell's Soup Can" art piece.
7. NFL's Nate Burleson made the headlines in 2013 after breaking his arm in a car accident. What was the immediate cause of this car accident?

Answer: He was trying to save a pizza from falling from his passenger's seat

Yes, pizza strikes again. Nate Burleson, who in 2010 signed a five-year contract with the Detroit Lions, was involved in a car crash after trying to stop his takeaway pizza from falling from his passenger's seat. His arm was broken in two places, but was back scoring touchdowns just two months later.
8. If you are unfortunate enough to produce insufficient amounts of the enzyme FMO3 in your body, what will happen to you?

Answer: You'll give off a strong fishy odour

FMO3 stands for flavin containing monooxygenase 3, an enzyme that is responsible for converting trimethylamine in our diets into trimethylamine oxide. The result is a build-up of trimethylamine in your body, which is released in sweat, giving a constantly fishy odour.

As the "-uria" part of this conditions name suggests, trimethylamine will also leave the body via urine in people who suffer from it.
9. In 1911, the daredevil Bobby Leach became the second person to go down Niagara Falls in a barrel. What unfortunate and unfitting event led eventually to his death?

Answer: He slipped on an orange peel and his resultant wound became gangrenous

Yet it is the banana skin that gets a bad reputation in the media.

Leach was the second person (after Annie Taylor) to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. The irony of surviving a 52 metre plunge down Niagara Falls, but dying of injuries sustained from a fall no more than a few feet is certainly saddening.
10. While it has been established that eggs contain cholesterol, it has not yet been proven conclusively that they actually raise the level of serum cholesterol in the human blood stream. Eggs proved no good for Craig Evans, however, who received a punch in the face after throwing an egg at a British politician. Which politician was this?

Answer: John Prescott

John Prescott (then deputy prime minister) arrived in Rhyl, North Wales in 2001 with the intention of addressing a party rally. However, he was pelted with an egg by a man in the crowd. Prescott's reflex-like reaction was to punch the man in the face, earning him the nickname "Two Jabs Prescott", which would stick with him thereafter.
