Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dallas, Texas in 1963 was the scene of the assassination of which high profile American, supposedly shot by a former marine? (Or was he really killed by the CIA?)

Answer: John F. Kennedy

US President John F. Kennedy (JFK), was in a motorcade with his wife Jackie when he was shot by sniper fire on November 22, 1963. Former marine Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for shooting the President, although he steadfastly maintained his innocence. Investigations into the event did not correlate with witnesses' accounts of the number of shots fired and the direction from which they came. It was alleged that Oswald was a lone gunman, however the television footage of the motorcade proved that the official investigation was flawed. The evidence showed more shots than the investigation said were fired, and they also came from different directions.

Was Oswald involved and if so, who was he working with? What really happened that day? I know what really happened...JFK was shot and killed. After all is said and done, that's all that really matters.
2. Real or fake? Conspiracists claim that a historical event in 1969, beamed live to homes around the planet, did not actually happen. Which event was this?

Answer: Moon landing

The Cold War was, theoretically, the impetus behind the USA going to the moon. The Soviets had beaten the Americans into space and this did not sit well with some parties in NASA and the Government. But did man actually land on the moon?

There are several theories supporting the idea that the lands were faked or at least did not happen the way NASA claimed. The most telling evidence put forward to support this claim is that of the photographs taken on the lunar surface. One such photograph shows an astronaut, backlit by light. Skeptics reason that you would not be able to see the front of the astronaut's spacesuit if the light was behind him, yet every detail is crystal clear. What some NASA experts cannot explain is why a light is reflected off the visor if the light is behind him.

Others claim that the levels of radiation the astronauts would have been exposed to once outside of Earth's atmosphere made a trip to the moon impossible.

The Soviets were unable to track deep spacecraft until 1972 and therefore could not cry foul play. However, in 1972, they obtained the technology- and the Apollo moon project was abruptly scrapped. Coincidence or evidence?

Area 51 has also been named as the site where the "moon landing" footage was filmed.

NASA has refuted all claims by hoax conspiracists with compelling reasons to support a real lunar landing. They have also released pictures of the lunar surface since the Apollo missions were scrapped to show evidence still on the moon that man was actually there.
3. Hoax or elaborate cover-up? In 1943, "Project Rainbow" was a scientific attempt to render a navy vessel invisible to the naked eye--or at least invisible to enemy radar. What was the name of this project?

Answer: The Philadelphia Experiment

Project Rainbow (also termed The Philadelphia Experiment) was an experiment designed to make the Navy ship USS Eldridge invisible to enemy radar. According to the theory, the ship was in the Philadelphia Naval dockyards and its generators designed to heat up the air around the ship, causing a mirage effect. Conspiracists claim something went wrong, causing the ship to disappear completely, reappearing moments later. Naval staff based in Norfolk, Virginia later reported seeing the USS Eldridge sitting offshore for a brief time before it suddenly disappeared again. The conspiracy theory proposes that the ship had been accidentally teleported and this caused several sailors to be badly injured. Many suffered mental illnesses and breakdowns following the experiment where it is claimed some sailors were fused to the steel bulkhead. Two other sailors had vanished completely, only to reappear at Long Island Air Force base fifty years later. When found, these sailors claimed to have jumped from the ship while it was teleporting, giving rise to the theory that the ship had not only travelled through space, but time as well.

Predictably, the Navy denied all knowledge of the experiment. The ship's logs also placed the ship in the Bahamas at the time it was supposed to be in Philadelphia.
4. When famous people die unexpectedly, conspiracy theories flourish. The death of which "People's Princess" has conspiracists convinced she was murdered, despite there being no evidence of a plot?

Answer: Diana, Princess of Wales

Diana, former wife of HRH Prince Charles, was killed in a car crash in a Paris tunnel on August 31 1997. Conspiracists theorise that she was killed by an MI5 plot as she was a threat to the British monarchy, and because of her popularity, a threat to Britain.

Others speculate that Dodi Fayed, her companion and reported lover, was actually the target. Several days before the crash, Diana told reporters that she was planning to withdraw from the paparazzi limelight "soon". After her death, conspiracists postulated that she planned to fake her death that night but the attempt obviously went wrong.
5. The air attack on Hawaiian Pearl Harbor in 1941 was the catalyst for sending the US into WWII. Of course, after such a devastating event, conspiracy theories pointed the finger not at the Japanese, but at the US President. Which President was alleged to have known about the planned attack yet did nothing to prevent it?

Answer: Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Conspiracists claim Roosevelt (FDR) knew about the planned attack on Pearl Harbor, but did not warn the base. The supposed reason for this oversight is that FDR secretly wanted to join the war. Allegedly, he withheld vital information and equipment from the base, including the decoder for the Japanese "Purple" code, which it is claimed to have outlined plans for the attack. Theorists continue to wonder why a large military base was caught asleep and undefended, its guns unmanned, allowing the decimation of the base, including the demise of over 2000 military personnel, 18 warships and 200 aircraft.

Possibly this theory was put forward by the same people who claim the 9/11 terrorist attacks were allowed by the US government because they wanted a reason to attack Iraq.
6. Despite this theory being debunked, speculation remains that a virus was originally developed by the US government as a means to wipe out entire races of people. Which virus, a global pandemic, is responsible for killing millions of people, including Freddie Mercury and Rock Hudson?

Answer: HIV

This theory gained momentum because the HIV virus that causes AIDS seemed to appear from nowhere, decimating millions of humans the world over. Some versions have the virus being deliberately created, while others claim it was created during work on vaccines. It has since been proven that the virus evolved from the Simian Immunodeficiency virus in Africa.

There are theories that the H1N1 virus (swine flu) was also created specifically as a means of biological warfare, however, Freddie Mercury and Rock Hudson died from AIDS, not Swine Flu.
7. Which British liner was torpedoed by a German wartime U-Boat, leading to the theory that it was a ploy to involve the US in the war?

Answer: Lusitania

This basis of this theory is that Winston Churchill himself arranged for the Lusitania to be sunk as a way of committing the US to British aid in World War I. This theory has many holes and unlikely to be true. However, the Lusitania was full of American passengers and was indeed carrying a cargo of ammunition, the reason Germany gave for the sinking.

The Lusitania was allowed to steam unescorted through an area that 23 other cruise ships had been torpedoed. This is despite the fact that several Navy destroyers were available for escort duty at the time.

The theory also speculates that the Lusitania was only to suffer minor damage and still be able to complete her voyage, but fate stepped in and the ship was destroyed.
8. A British conspiracy theory levels accusations at the 2005 UK government for masterminding a local disaster in order to foster public support for the war on terrorists. What is the government allegedly guilty of?

Answer: London Tube bombings

During the London peak hour rush on July 7, 2005, a series of explosions on the underground tube line and a city bus was thought to be the work of Islamic terrorists. Three bombs, hidden in backpacks, were detonated on the underground trains within a minute of each other, throwing the entire system into meltdown. An hour later, another device exploded on a London bus in Tavistock Square. The bus was packed with people who had been forced from the tube station onto the buses.

The conspiracy theory relating to this disaster accuses not only the government, but also the British and Israeli Secret Services of causing the bombings themselves. It is alleged the four Muslims accused of plotting and carrying out the suicide bombings had been recruited for a terrorist training exercise. CCTV evidence of the four terrorists place them at various points around the tube line but the bombers would not have been able to get from point A to point B in the time indicated by the video footage. This gives rise to the speculation that the video had been altered to fit the crime.
9. Do you believe? A hypothesis broached in 1982 by authors Baigent, Leigh and Lincoln, linking Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton, the Knights Templar and the Priory of Scion in a conspiracy, had the Roman Catholic Church crying blasphemy. What was the name of their book that spawned heated debate globally?

Answer: The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail

"The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail", released in 1982, postulated that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and their direct descendants are part of the Merovingian Dynasty in France. The book claims that the family is guarded by The Priory of Scion and their defensive branch, The Knights Templar.

The book lists Leonardo da Vinci and Sir Isaac Newton as Grand Masters of the Priory, and claims the Church was responsible for trying to eradicate any descendants of Jesus's bloodline. The book generated massive controversy when it was released, with the Church crying foul, but the tables were turned when Dan Brown released his book "The Da Vinci Code" in 2003.
10. In 1947, something crashed to Earth and conspiracies were rife- witnesses claimed it was an alien spacecraft, but the local government spin doctors said it was just a weather balloon. Where did this momentous event take place?

Answer: Roswell, New Mexico

In 1947, a local ranch manager found wreckage strewn over a wide area northwest of Roswell and alerted the authorities. Army personnel arrived and collected the debris, soon after releasing a press statement saying they had recovered what looked to be flying disc. This statement was retracted later and senior Army officers said it had been a weather balloon. Major Marcel, a decorated war hero, recovered the debris and said the metal was not like anything he had ever seen. It was incredibly light, yet was unable to be damaged by a sledgehammer. Another crash at Socorro, New Mexico, allegedly was another disc shaped craft, this time with dead aliens still inside. A former mortician also claimed that he was involved in alien autopsies performed at the Roswell Air Force base.
