Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the workhouse built in 1828 in Hobart to receive female convicts?

Answer: Cascades Female Factory

This workhouse was built partly as a segregated prison where women could be put to useful work, partly to separate them from the ordinary population whom it was feared that the convict women would corrupt. The regime was harsh and the death rate among inmates was high. It was closed in 1856 but its site is now a National Heritage Place which is well worth a visit.
2. Much of our trip was to see matches in the Cricket World Cup. Which city did we visit to see Pakistan play Zimbabwe in the Woolloongabba cricket ground?

Answer: Brisbane

Like most cricket grounds, this is a huge oval which can hold 42,000 spectators. The Gabba, as it is known, is also used for a variety of other sports including Australian Rules football.

Brisbane is the capital of the state of Queensland and is named after the river on which it stands, the river itself being named after the second British Governor of the original settlement of New South Wales, Sir Thomas Brisbane. One of its highlights is a beautiful botanical garden.
3. Our trip took us into the red centre, where we visited Uluru and a spectacular rock formation about 30 kilometres away which used to be known as "the Olgas". In 1993, when the Australian Government adopted a dual naming policy, which aboriginal name was added to Mount Olga to give the formation a new official name?

Answer: Kata Tjuta

This rock formation of sandstone domes is believed to be five hundred million years old. The rocks change colour with the movement of the sun, in the early morning and the evening appearing to be dark red. We found this formation even more impressive than the more famous Uluru (Ayers Rock).
4. While in Victoria, we took a train trip to the gold field museum of Sovereign Hill, where we were able actually to go down the mine. In which Victorian city is this museum?

Answer: Ballarat

At this museum there are opportunities to pan for gold or to witness re-enactments of aspects of gold field life. In one area of the village you can visit Chinatown, showing aspects of the culture of the Chinese labourers who came to Ballarat in the nineteenth century.
5. On our visit to one state capital city we were able to go for a sail on the river Torrens. Which city was that?

Answer: Adelaide

Adelaide, South Australia, was named after William IV's queen. The trip on the river took us past a remarkable number of rowing club boathouses as well as showing us some lovely gardens and the Adelaide Oval.
6. One of the highlights of our journey was a trip on the Great Ocean Road, which was built between 1919 and 1932. Which group of people did most of the work constructing this road?

Answer: Returned servicemen from the ANZAC force in World War 1

The road was built in part to provide work for returned servicemen who might otherwise have become unemployed. Running along the southern coast of Victoria, it offers views of dramatic rock formations such as the Twelve Apostles and London Arch (formerly London Bridge, until it collapsed in January 1990).
7. While visiting South Australia we took a ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw on the third largest island in Australia, which is famous for its wild life. Which island?

Answer: Kangaroo Island

While on the island we saw seals, kangaroos and koalas in the wild, but the island also contains other species including echidna, wallaby and bandicoot. It is an important centre for the raising and export of queen Ligurian honey bees.
8. On our way to the red centre, we flew over Australia's largest salt lake. Named for a nineteenth century explorer, what is it called in English?

Answer: Lake Eyre

Officially known as Kati Thanda - Lake Eyre, this salt lake has been formed from the evaporation of flood waters over many centuries. In most years there is no water in the lake, but every few years it fills up to varying depths and then evaporates again. It is the lowest point in Australia. Donald Campbell used its salt flats for attempts on the world land speed record.
9. Which city's botanical gardens contain a section known as Guilfoyle's Volcano, used as a home for cacti and other succulents?

Answer: Melbourne

Guilfoyle's volcano was built as a reservoir in the shape of a volcano in 1876 by the then curator of the gardens, William Guilfoyle. In more recent years it has been reconstructed and displays a wide range of cacti and other succulent plants. It is one of the highlights of the Botanic Gardens along with the ornamental lake and the broad range of trees, lawns and flowering plants that make this a pleasure to visit. We were even able to sit on little chairs to watch an open air performance of Shakespeare's "As You Like It" against a background of trees. Wonderful experience.
10. Mount Wellington, with its cliffs of dolerite columns nicknamed "organ pipes" overlooks which of the cities we visited?

Answer: Hobart

From the top of Mount Wellington there are excellent views of Hobart and the river Derwent. Hobart is a charming little city with many attractions and some outstanding restaurants. A highlight of our visit was a catamaran trip to Peppermint Bay.
