1. A. This Canadian island is one of the Sverdrup Islands. It´s named after a Norwegian sponsor of Nansen´s, Amundsen´s and Sverdrup´s polar expeditions. In size it ranks as # 32 in the world.

Answer: Axel Heiberg Island

The island was discovered by the members of the second "Fram" voyage (1898-1902). "Fram" had been used by Fridtjof Nansen´s polar expedition 1893-96. On this second expedition it was led by Otto Sverdrup. Amund Ringnes Island is named after another sponsor, but this island is smaller.

The two other islands suggested do not exist, although Nordensköld was a Swedish polar explorer and Amundsen a Norwegian explorer.

Sakhalin was discovered in 1643 and was Chinese until 1850 when it was divided between Russia and Japan. It´s now entirely owned by Russia. Spitsbergen belongs to Svalbard Islands. Severnaya Island and Sibiryakova Island are in Russia.
