Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is Afghanistan situated?

Answer: Central Asia

It is separated from the Indian sub-continent by high mountains. It is to the east of the region normally known as the Middle East. (The fact that it is an Islamic country doesn't of course make it part of the Middle East: much of Indonesia and Nigeria, for example, is also Muslim).
2. Afghanistan is landlocked, that is, it has no coastline.

Answer: True

It is not only landlocked, but also one of the most inaccessible countries in the world. Even the most southerly point in the country is nearly 300 miles from the nearest sea - the Arabian Sea.
3. What is the capital of Afghanistan?

Answer: Kabul

Other large cities include Kandahar (in the south), Herat (in the west) and Mazar-i-Sharif (in the north).
4. Which of the following towns is NOT in Afghanistan?

Answer: Quetta

Quetta is the capital of Balochistan in Pakistan. Herat is in the west of Afghanistan, near Iran, Kandahar is in the south and Mazar-i-Sharif is in the north.
5. What is the name of the pass between Pakistan and Afghanistan near Peshawar?

Answer: Khyber

The Bolan Pass is wholly in Pakistan, about 30 miles SE of the Pakistani city of Quetta.
6. With which of the following countries does Afghanistan NOT share a common border?

Answer: India (excluding Kashmir)

Afghanistan borders on Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China, Pakistan, Iran and the Pakistani-controlled part of Kashmir. The border with China is only about 50 miles.
7. When most of Afghanistan is controlled by the Taliban, in the areas under Taliban rule women (and girls) are forced to lead very restricted lives. What are they forbidden to do?

Answer: All of these things

These restrictions are based on the Taliban interpretation of Islamic law.
8. The Amudar'ya River forms the greater part of the northern border of Afghanistan. This river also has a European name. What is it?

Answer: Oxus

The Amudar'ya River flows into the Aral Sea.
9. Much of Afghanistan is very mountainous. What is the name of the highest range of mountains, which rises to above 18,000 feet?

Answer: Hindu Kush

The Himalayas are well to the east, on the border between Nepal and China, the Caucasus Mountains are much further west between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and there is no 'K2 Range' though there is a K2 Mountain in the Karakoram Mountains.
10. The Taliban (or Taleban) regime is described as 'Islamic Fundamentalist'. What does this mean in this context?

Answer: All of these

Fundamentalism is not peculiar to Islam and can be found in other religions, too. However, by any standards, Taliban fundamentalism is one of the most extreme varieties found anywhere, in any religion.
