Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following oceans does NOT border Antarctica?

Answer: Arctic

The Arctic Ocean is at the other end of the world, primarily in the North Polar region; it is the world's smallest by area as well as its shallowest. The Southern Ocean sits at the other end of the globe. It has a range of names that it has been called over time, including the Great Southern, Antarctic, South Polar and Austral Ocean.
2. Which of these is NOT an official geographic division of Antarctica?

Answer: North Antarctica

East and West Antarctica are the two major divisions, separated by the Transantarctic Mountains and broadly being where they lie in relation to the earth's east and west hemispheres. They are often referred to as Greater and Lesser Antarctica, in recognition that the East region is much larger than the West.
3. Which of these is NOT an island off the Antarctic continent?

Answer: Phillip Island

While Phillip Island is known for its native penguin population, it is off the coast of Victoria, Australia. Ross Island contains Mount Erebus, Antarctica's largest volcano. Deception Island and Penguin Island are part of the South Shetland Island group, about 120km north of the main Antarctic Peninsula.
4. Antarctica is the odd continent out because it does not have any areas officially called 'lakes'.

Answer: False

Although Antarctica doesn't have any traditional lakes, it does have hundreds of subglacial lakes. Its largest is Lake Vostov, which is over 200km long and 50km wide, with depths up to hundreds of metres in some parts.
5. Which of these is NOT an animal native to Antarctica?

Answer: Polar bear

Polar bears are only found on the North Pole, and not Antarctica. Antarctica plays host to a large number of sea birds, including the snow petrel, blue-eyed shag and cape pigeon.
6. Several countries laid official claims to the Antarctic territory during the 20th century. Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: Brazil

The United Kingdom laid the first official claim to what is known as the British Antarctic Territory in 1908. Other countries have laid their own claims, including Norway, New Zealand, France, Chile, Australia and Argentina.
7. Antarctica has several seas named after explorers. Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Scotia Sea

The Weddell Sea was named after Scottish explorer James Weddell. The Bellingshausen Sea after Russian explorer Admiral Fabian Bellingshausen. And the Amundsen after Norwegian Roald Amundsen, who is recognised as the first person to reach the South Pole. The Scotia Sea was named after a ship captained by William Bruce in the early 20th century.
8. Antarctica is the odd continent out because at the turn of the 21st century, it was the only continent on Earth where no one had been born.

Answer: False

Emilio Palma made history in January 1978 by becoming the world's first recorded birth on the Antarctic continent. He was born on the Esperanza Base to Argentinian parents, his father being the commander of the Argentinian station.
9. Antarctica is the odd continent out because it contains more freshwater than any other continent. But how much?

Answer: Over half of the world's supply

In fact, due to its huge expanse of ice, Antarctica is estimated to hold between 60 and 70 percent of the world's freshwater supply. This is so much that if it all melted at once, the world's seas would immediately rise by about 60 metres.
10. Antarctica is the odd continent out for a number of reasons. Which one of these is NOT a reason that sets it apart from the rest?

Answer: It is the smallest continent by area

Antarctica, at just over 14 million square km, is larger than both Europe (10 million) and Australia (7.6 million).

It is indeed the southernmost continent and the driest (being classified as a desert due to minimal rainfall levels). And yes, there are no ants native to Antarctica, although there are insects: the largest being the wingless midge which measures just 13mm in length.
