Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You've checked into your room at the Copper Queen Hotel and decide to visit Brewery Gulch for some libations. What city are you visiting?

Answer: Bisbee

Bisbee is a neat place to visit and see some history. At the turn of the century, the Copper Queen Mine was one of the busiest in the world and Brewery Gulch was a place to unwind.
2. You drive across this river on State Highway 79 near Florence which prior to the Gadsden Purchase of 1853 was the border between Mexico and U.S.. What river have you crossed?

Answer: Gila

Leave your fishing tackle at home when you visit the Gila, since it seldom has water in it! Escaped German POWs during WWII thought they could raft down the Gila to the Colorado and escape to Mexico. Imagine their disappointment when they found a dry riverbed.
3. This city's name is from a Pima Indian word meaning "black at the foot of", referring to the nearby Sentinel Mountains. One of its early European settlers was Father Eusebio Kino. Can you name the city?

Answer: Tucson

Today there is a large, white "A" on Sentinel Peak, representing the University of Arizona. Tucson is also sometimes called The Old Pueblo.
4. You are in this city for "Helldorado Days" in October. What city are you visiting?

Answer: Tombstone

Step back a century or so and relive the shootout at the OK Corral and have a beer at Big Nose Kate's.
5. This city's name means garlic in Spanish and is roughly halfway between Tucson and Yuma. What city is this?

Answer: Ajo

Ajo was one of Arizona's richest copper camps in the early 20th century.
6. This city is located next door to Ft. Huachuca and was originally named for one of its early founders, Oliver Fry. What city is this?

Answer: Sierra Vista

Sierra Vista changed its name from Fry in 1955 (think about it-- Fry, Arizona). But they kept the main drag in town named Fry Boulevard to honor its early settler.
7. You visit the Rex Allen Museum and then head south to the Chiricahua National Monument. What city have you been visiting?

Answer: Willcox

Willcox was Rex Allen's boyhood home and he is still a favorite son. Look for his red, patent leather, golf cowboy boots, complete with spikes at his museum! Then go visit the "sky island" called the Chiracahua Monument, see the rock formations, and be awed.
8. One of the founders of this city was Jack Swilling, who revived the old HoHokam canals to bring water to local farms. What city are you visiting now?

Answer: Phoenix

Jack Swilling tapped into the Salt River and brought irrigation to the valley. From those humble beginnings, Phoenix, the state capitol is now a huge metropolis. Nearby Tempe is the home of Arizona State University.
9. You are heading along Interstate 10 and you pass a tall volcanic rock formation rising out of the flat desert. You stop and see a plaque which says this is the site of the westernmost skirmish of the Civil War. Where are you now?

Answer: Picacho Peak

Briefly, in 1862, Tucson was under control of the Confederate Army. Picacho Peak is a nice place to stop and stretch your legs on your way to Phoenix or Tucson. And if you need some exercise, you can climb the face of the peak-- with the help of a hand cable. Picacho is Spanish for peak, so the name is a bit redundant.
10. You visit the Casa Grande National Monument, an eleven room dwelling built by the Hohokam Indians around 1300 A.D.. The surrounding area is irrigated land, mostly planted with cotton. What town are you visiting?

Answer: Coolidge

The four story mud and caliche structure is actually located in Coolidge, not Casa Grande, which is about eleven miles to the west. The Casa Grande "ruins" are another "must see" on your tour of the state.
11. Just off of Interstate 17 you visit this small community that once was an important outpost for Indian fighter, General George Crook. Near a reliable river, this has been a rich agricultural area for many centuries. What city are you visiting?

Answer: Camp Verde

Camp Verde is a picturesque community with an excellent museum about the military outpost from which it takes its name.
12. You visit an art gallery where you purchase a painting of some of the beautiful red sandstone formations nearby. The "Cowboy Artists of America" call this city home. Where are you?

Answer: Sedona

Watch the movie "Broken Arrow" to see some of those sandstone formations, or better still, see them in person.
13. This city is located near the 35th parallel, at the base of the San Francisco Mountains. There are two natural springs nearby and stands of pine trees abound. What city is this?

Answer: Flagstaff

Cecil B. DeMille nearly set up his motion picture company in Flagstaff, until it snowed. He then kept heading west until he hit Hollywood. Flagstaff became a stop over for the railroad, then the famous Route 66 and is also home to Northern Arizona University.
14. This city in the White Mountains got its name from a winning hand in a card game. What city are you visiting now?

Answer: Show Low

The bet was over which of two settlers of this city would have to move. Whichever "showed low" got to stay, the other had to leave. Legend has it the winning card was a deuce of clubs.
15. This city is the county seat of Mohave County and may have once been named Shenfield Railroad Camp. Clark Gable and Carole Lombard were married here. What city are you visiting?

Answer: Kingman

Another important stop on Old Route 66 and for the mail and passenger airlines in the '20's and '30's. Also home to an air force base during WWII, which later became the Mohave County Airport. Hope you enjoyed your tour of Arizona, but there's nothing like seeing it in person.
