1. Which town in Victoria is associated with the Australian Defence Forces?

Answer: Puckapunyal

In 1904 the Australian Army established the Light Horse near Puckapunyal and by the time World War II began, Puckapunyal was officially the largest military training camp in Victoria. Puckapunyal is 100 km north of Melbourne on the Hume Highway.

Answer: Pacific Palms

The holiday destination of Pacific Palms got its name from the palm trees growing in the region. With beaches, lakes and sub-tropical rainforests, Boomerang Beach and Blueys Beach are the two best surfing beaches in the area!
3. New South Wales - what is the name of this district situated in the heart of the Lower Hunter Valley's wine region?

Answer: Pokolbin

Pokolbin is surrounded by beautiful vineyards and the Australian bush! The first vineyard was planted in the 1830s, but, it was not until the 1960s that the wine industry in the Hunter Valley area boomed.

Proserpine is near to Airlie Beach, Shute Harbour and the Whitsunday Islands. Proserpine was named after the Roman goddess Perserpina! With industry based around sugar cane, the Proserpine sugar mill opened in 1897 and is today one of the most modern in the world.

Answer: Port Augusta

Port Augusta is at the head of the Spencer Gulf and is known as the 'Crossroads of Australia'. Matthew Flinders explored the area in 1802 and the town was named in 1852 after Lady Augusta Young, the wife of the then Governor of South Australia.

Answer: Port Douglas

Port Douglas was named in honour of the then Premier of Queensland, John Douglas. The town was established in 1877 after the Palmer River gold rush and was the main port for the sugar mill at Mossman until 1958. It is circled by rainforests and fronts the Great Barrier Reef. Port Douglas is now a well-known international tourist destination.

Answer: Port Hedland

Named after Captain Peter Hedland who entered the harbour in 1863. Between 1896 and 1899 a jetty and causeway were built. The Port now handles the largest iron ore exports of any Australian port with ore arriving via the longest privately operated railroad in Australia from some of the world's largest mines, some up to 420 km away!

Answer: Perisher

The Perisher Valley was named in the 1840s with the first ski lodges opening in 1951. Mount Perisher is 2,054 m high, has an average winter temperature of -2C and fine weather most of the time. However, unlike Thredbo, Perisher is like a ghost town in the summer!

Mostly by-passed by tourism, Perth, named after the town in Scotland, was chosen in 1821 by Governor Macquarie as a townsite and was proclaimed in 1836. Its historic buildings, from both the Georgian and Victorian colonial architectural periods, remain mainly intact to this day and are very charming!

Answer: Port Essington

Port Essington was chosen as the first white settlement in the Northern Territory in 1824 and in 1838 Captain Bremer arrived and opened a military outpost which closed in 1849. The ruins of Port Essington are in the Gurig National Park on the Cobourg Peninsula, which was named after Queen Victoria's uncle. Port Essington was named after Vice Admiral Essington.
