Answer: Idaho

Idaho known as the 'potato state' is also known as the river state, having more rivers than any other state in the country.
2. Who is the man that the Payette river was named after?

Answer: Francois Payette

Francois Payette was a French Canadian that came to the United States in the early 1800's. The first time he saw the Payette River Basin he claimed it and the name stuck.
3. There are four sections on the South Fork of the Payette. What section has the class VI portage?

Answer: Canyon section

This section of the Payette is by far the most difficult, inculding the portage called Big Falls. Only very experienced kayakers run this and only if it is at a safe level. Big Falls is a spectacular series of waterfalls and can be seen from the highway far above.
4. The South Fork of the Payette is fed by a reservoir. What is the name of this reservoir?

Answer: Deadwood Reservoir

The Deadwood Reservoir is fed into the South Fork mainley to feed water to southern Idaho farmers. It also in low water years can help keep this spectacular river open to boaters and kayakers. It is also a bottom realising reservoir, so the water is really really cold.
5. What is the name of the portage on the south fork of the Payette?

Answer: Big Falls

Big Falls is a series of four, twelve foot drops. No boaters are allowed to run this, but some kayakers do. It is all recirculating water and is a very dangerous place to be even for those crazy kayakers.

Answer: Banks Lowman Highway

The Banks Lowman Highway has only been paved for a few years and as winding and steep as it gets it is a very senic highway. It flooded in the spring of '97 and washed the road out near the confluence of the main and the north fork, on the staircase section.
7. What section of the river has the rapid named after the famous Walter Blackadar?

Answer: Canyon Section

Walter Blackadar was a pioneer kayaker on the rivers in Idaho. He was also a doctor,but unfortunately the river claimed him when just below the portage there was a river wide log (strainer)that he became pinned under and was unable to get out leaving him to die thus, naming the rapids after him.
8. What is the name of the take out for the canyon section?

Answer: Danskin

The Danskin take out is always really buzy so most boaters try and get in and out quickly. The ramp at Danskin is 60 feet long so it's one last trudge up the hill to the parking lot.
9. What is the name of the hotsprings on the canyon section?

Answer: Pine Flats hotsprings

Pine Flats has a thousand foot waterfall dropping into a hotspring pool that is man made and kept up well. there are also lots of other little pools, but the one with the waterfall is the best. You can come by river, or by trail from the campground called Pine Flats campground.
10. What is the type of rock that is most abundant on the south fork of the Payette river?

Answer: Granite

The canyon walls in this section are abundant with granite as well as the huge granite slabs in the water that create huge shelves in the beautiful emerald greeen water. Most of the Payette River Basin cuts through the homogenous granite rock formation known as the Idaho Batholith
