Answer: Salvador

The city of Sao Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos, better known as Salvador is in fact "City of the Holy Saviour of the Bay of All Saints". This city is known for its cuisine, its music and for its architecture. There is a lot of African influence that graces the city of Salvador. The flavor of Portuguese colonial architecture is reflected in the city's historical monuments. Salvador is a city that is divided due to its escarpment. The Cidade Alta is the upper portion of the city and the Cidade Baixa is the lower portion. On the highest portion you can view the city's cathedral and the majority of its administrative buildings. The first elevator installed in Brazil, called the Elevador Lacerda, connects the upper and lower portions of the city and has done so since 1873.

The picture is a sculpture by Salvador Dali called "Profile of Time". I used this image as a clue for the city's name of Salvador.

Fortaleza's Mucuripe lighthouse is an architectural style called Baroque. It was built by slaves in the years between 1827 and 1846 and is one of the oldest structures in Fortaleza. The lighthouse has been retired and is known as "Old Eye of the Sea".

There are plenty of documents, photographs and artwork in the lighthouse museum which refer to Fortaleza. Besides the Mucuripe lighthouse there are many attractions to see in Fortaleza such as Theatro Jose de Alencar, Estatua de Iracema, Forte de Nossa Senhora da Assuncao and Castelao football stadium. The image depicts the city of Fortaleza in 1730 through the view of artist Terto de Amorim.

There are about nine hundred and fifty marionettes as part of the Giramundo collection. At the Museu Giramundo (museum) you can view things like sketches, set design outlines and of course puppets.

The Giramundo puppets are different from other puppets because of their plastic molded shapes which vary according to each puppet character. The city of Belo Horizonte is also known for its Botanic Gardens, Pampulha Art Museum and the Mineiro Museum, just to name a few places to see in the city.
6. Which Brazilian city lies at the confluence of the Solimoes and Negro rivers?

Answer: Manaus

Manaus is located in the northern part of Brazil and was originally known as Fort of Sao Jose do Rio Negro when it was founded in 1669. In 1832 it was renamed to a city with the meaning "mother of the gods". Manaus was legally made into a city in 1848 and was named Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro which meant "The City of the Margins of Black River". On September 4, 1856 the name was changed to Manaus.

The city will be a host for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Late in the 19th century Manaus was part of the Amazon region's rubber boom. Having been restored, the Teatro Amazonas opera house still exists. Important businesses in the Manaus area are or were timber and Brazil nuts, along with the petroleum, soap and chemical industries.

The Negro River is a tributary of the Amazon.

The Solimoes River is part of the upper Amazon River.

The Wire Opera House is built out of steel tubes and it sits on what was once a rock quarry. Curitiba holds the Maratona Ecologica International de Curitiba ("Curitiba International Ecological marathon") in November of each year. This marathon is known to be the most difficult marathon in Brazil due to the hills and heat at that time of the year.
8. There is a Brazilian city called Recife. Is this city also known by the moniker "Brazilian Venice"?

Answer: Yes

Recife is situated where both the Beberibe River and the Capibaribe River flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The name of Recife is an indirect reference to the coral reefs along the shores of the city. Due to the several rivers and little islands Recife has well over fifty bridges crossing the water which is why it was given the nickname of "Brazilian Venice".

The climate of Recife is tropical all year round with trade winds which blow from the Atlantic Ocean.
9. The Brazilian city of Porto Alegre is located by a lagoon. What is the name of this lagoon?

Answer: Lagoa dos Patos

Lagoa dos Patos is the large coastal lagoon in Brazil and the second largest lagoon in South America. Porto Alegre sits at the northern end of this southeastern part of Brazil. The mouth of the Rio Guaiba estuary is where Porto Alegre sits. Porto Alegre has a subtopical climate along with a humid subtropical climate. Piratini Palace, Public Market, Farroupilha Park, Saint Hilaire Park and Usina do Gasometro are just some of the places to see in Porto Alegre.
10. Portuguese for Bethlehem, which city in Brazil is also known as "City of Mango Trees"?

Answer: Belem

Balem is the Portuguese word for Bethlehem. Belem does have a nickname which is "City of Mango Trees", "Cidade das Mangueiras" in Portuguese. Some of the fine attractions of Belem include Teatro da Paz, Belem Zoological Park and Gardens, Fachada Cathedral and the Ver-o-peso market.

The city is graced by the River Guama in north-central Brazil. The Cirio is celebrated in October and is considered to be the "Christmas of the Amazon". The architecture of Belem is similar to that of Lisbon, Portugal which was an inspiration. The photo I used was to give the sense of the star of Bethlehem.
